My Salton rice cooker finally gave out after 8 years of use, and I replaced it with the Black & Decker Rice Cooker Plus. The good points are it is quite easy to use and can cook rice quite well. The disappointment to me is the cleanup.
Having used the Salton, I am accustomed to the starchy steam these types of cookers produce but I find this cooker to be messier than my Salton was. It "spits" all over its top, handles and even the surrounding coutertop are and floor (I have to line with paper towels to catch some of the sputter). I've tried rinsing the rice first and the performance was the same.
It is a big plus that the rice container itself is nonstick, but the lid takes some scrubbing, not just a light wash. I suppose this is a good value for the price I paid (under $30), but I think I may be upgrading soon to avoid that sticky mess.

This cooker is very light weight steel. It looks good and functions well, but will probably not be kitchen quality for very many years. After just a few uses, the steel is beginning to "pit" in the bottom. This leads me to believe that this pot was not made with high quality stainless steel.

Indian cooking becomes ridiculously easy with a pressure cooker - especially if you are planning on cooking lentils or beans. Not only do you save time, you also retain nutrients which can otherwise be destroyed when exposed to high heat for long periods of time.
Safety is virtually guaranteed with Hawkins' foolproof design - if the lid is not closed properly, the cooker just won't attain full pressure and so won't become dangerous; if there is even a little pressure remaining, the lid just won't be forced open. And if - this happened to me once - you put in too little water by mistake and the cooker boils dry, you are still okay thanks to a safety valve ingeniously placed just under the bar on the lid - so that when it opens up, the heat gets deflected away from you.
I have only used aluminum cookers, but the stainless steel ones are great too - if a little more expensive. Worth it if you want to avoid stains that can sometimes be a problem with aluminum cookers. I have three cookers in 2, 3.5 and 4.5 litre sizes. 2L is ideal if you're living alone and the 3.5 is just right for a two person family. I use the 4.5 when I cook for guests. I will still buy the 5L because it really is the most convenient size for an average family.
My only grouse with buying these cookers online is that you don't get accessories or replacement parts as easily as you can in Indian stores. After I blew out the safety valve in my 2L, I'm waiting for my next trip to India to get the lid fixed. Also, the 5L (and above) sizes become much more useful when you can use them with accessories like inserts - for multilevel cooking inside the cooker (cook two dishes in one go) and steamers - (for rice cakes etc.)
Bottom line - if you are planning on cooking Indian dishes, invest in a pressure cooker. Its versatile enough to cook pulses, vegetables and meats and will last you a lifetime!

I have owned this cooker for just over one year. I rarely take time to write reviews because I usually have nothing significant to add. This time is different! I hope everyone reads what I have to say because their and their family's health depend upon it. What is also disturbing is that Wolfgang Puck's company could not care any less.
Upon receiving this rice cooker, I was shocked at the POOR QUALITY of the cooking pot itself, which is light-weight aluminum sprayed with a very thin, teflon-like coating to keep the rice from sticking. I usually only buy the very best cookware, and rarely buy any with a non-stick coating because it is well known that these coatings contain toxic substances that we can ingest as they break down. I bought this sight-unseen, though, because I was only going to be steaming food in it and I trusted this would be up to my high standards. After all, Wolfgang's "spiel" for this item includes these words: "... he brings that same (unparalleled) level of excellence to his own line of professional-quality cookware." If this is his idea of professional-quality cookware, I now think he must be an idiot - or a fraud. While I am not one who likes to complain, I called his company twice over the past year to discuss this problem. I got nowhere. They just do not care about design issues that can affect public health, so I decided to write about this problem instead.
As careful as I have been to use the special plastic spoon provided with the cooker to prevent scratching, the pot's toxic finish began to show marks of wear within two weeks of once-a-day use. A replacement pot that I recently began to use has shown the same undue wear. I see now it is a design problem. The cooking pot is one layer of thin aluminum with no extra layers at its bottom where it sits directly over a hot heating element. Although the element is covered, it obviously is not enough to protect the bottom of the pot from heating temperatures that cause the ultra-thin, non-stick coating to break down. It only breaks down at the bottom, not at the sides. Both cooking pots began to show wear and tear within just a couple of weeks of light daily use, and leaving food in it to keep it warm probably hastens the breakdown. The problem is not an aesthetic one. This breakdown of a toxic surface contaminates the food you eat and can lead to cancer and contribute to other health problems.
As I said above, I see no recourse but to throw the whole thing out. What good does it do to keep replacing a cooking pot that is simply not built to specs that can withstand sitting on top of its heating element? After going through two cooking pots in less than 6 months of usage, I believe it is fair to say that the coating on the pot is simply not heat-resistant enough to be safely used as instructed in this rice cooker. Shame on Wolfgang Puck for putting his name on it and misleading so many of us!

We've used several brands of rice cookers, all claiming to be good. One caught on fire after two months, another lasted only a year before it simply stopped working all together.
When we spotted the Rival cooker at a local store, we bought it based on the name. I've used Rival crockpots since my college days, and have never had a problem with them.
This cooker does the job, and does it well. We've had ours for just over two years, and the non-stick bowl has only now started to show wear. We mainly cook brown rice, with only the occasional white rice meal.
We like the larger capacity bowl. Though we could get along with a smaller bowl, this one allows us to add things in or various recipes, and the warming option keeps the meal nicely warmed.
We plan to replace our current rice cooker with the exact same model.
**My only issue with the 10-cup cooker has been the smaller bowl. If you're like me and sometimes add other ingredients that need to be stirred in, the smaller bowl makes that difficult. That was my own error in judgment.
A tip for those who have a problem with starch spewing onto counter tops; rinsing the rice helps alleviate this issue. Simply place the rice in a strainer and run cold water through it (or rinse it in the rice bowl). It's more of an issue with white rice than brown.

I have been canning for 20 years, I have had this canner system for 15 and I will not ever go back to boiling water bath canning ever again. This canner is not meant to replace a pressure canner for low acid foods. It is a shallow pan with a rack and a large lid. The shallow pan is filled with water and boiled, the rack fits over the boiling water and the jars are put on the rack (7 quarts at a time). When the water boils, it creates steam- steam is at least 212 degree water- steam can actually get hotter than boiling water. When the steam is at a certain level (in the instructions) you begin timing your jars. The reason that this is so easy is that it doesn't take 20 minutes after you put your jars into the rack just to come back to a boil, thus saving a lot of time. I highly recommend this product. I just made salsa and it took me 30 minutes for 14 jars- In a traditional pot it would have taken at least 2 hours. That is the difference!

This turkey fryer was given to me as a gift on fathers day and I can honestly say, this is one of the best gifts ever. I LOVE this cooker!!! It saves me time, work, money, nutrients, cooks 3-10 times faster. You can put food in even if not defrosted [although microwaves help that issue]. They make the best stews, soups, sweet and sour ribs, chili, puddings, cheese cakes etc. You can buy a really inexpensive cut of meat, put in your spices, some water and wine, and in less than 20 minutes it is fork tender. Whenever I have a recipe that calls for cooked chicken [like enchiladas], I buy the less expensive whole chicken, put it in the cooker and in 15-20 minutes it is falling-off-the-bone tender.
This one comes with a double locking system and two levels of pressure; one for veggies and grains; the other for more dense foods like dry beans, meats or squash. I would never be without one again. I'm going to order the companion 6 quart that Fagor makes for those larger meats and veggies!

I ordered this hotpot last Dec. and it worked well for the initial six months. The problem came out in the seventh months. The high power button fails to work. Now I could only use low power and it takes a long time to cook the food. I'm not sure how long the warranty of the product is.

Tagine refers to both the type of cooking as well as the cookware itself in this case. You would have chicken and pine nut tagine, lamb and plum tagine, etc. The tagine cooker is a traditional African item, designed to tenderize the toughest cuts of meat while at the same time imbueing meats, vegetables, and fruit with added herbs and spices. You can put almost any type of food in it that would go into more-recognizable stews, soups, and roasts. Recipes can be found in books and are plentiful online.
The magic of the tagine cooker is the tall cover and the low heat required. The food slowly simmers, and the rising steam condenses on the high sloping slides, marinating, flavoring, and tenderizing the contents for perhaps 90 to 120 minuts, depending on the meat and heat source available. The lid has a distinct handle that dissipates heat, so that the lid can be removed without burning yourself.
The Emile Henry product is of the highest quality. The material is a high-heat ceramic; ours has a terrific matte black finish. It can handle a medium to large size chicken, or several pork chops, or perhaps a 2.5 lb roast, for example, with whatever vegetables available. In this case, the 2.6 quart size can make a nice dinner for 4-6 people, depending on side dishes (couscous, rice, risotto), although the makings really add up to a one-pot meal. Maybe some unusual bread, a little wine, or lemoned water or tea.
You can spice up the recipes as much as your tastes call for, and you'll have an excuse to shop for (or order online) some exotic flavorings, such as preserved lemons (Meyers), saffron, the newly-accessible sea salts, various paprikas, and other old-world cover-ups.
Heat source: In addition to the Le Creuset (about $140) and Emiril (about $100) brand tagines, which are smaller (1.5 to 1.75 quarts), the Emile Henry tagine differs from others in that only these three can be used on any heat source---gas, electric, cooktop, charcoal. Most tagines are very simple clay cookware, generally with some glazing, but tend to be brittle and somewhat delicate and prone to cracking; they cannot take a direct electric coil at all, or high heat from a flame which you might want to sear the meats. The Emile Henry can go from kitchen to table to freezer; it is an incredibly handsome serving piece and versatile cookware item, handling stews, soups, casseroles, even bread baking. Enjoy!

I dropped the rating I might have given by two stars.
Why did Foreman not include the guides and tables with the product?

Purchased this pot as a replacement for one I had for years. This one is much nicer quality, larger and cooks even nicer than my old one.
