KitchenAid Slow Cookers Review

KitchenAid Slow Cookers

After my experience, I looked up KitchenAid's website. There they have a forum and a special thread for those who have had their crocks crack. Some people are on their 3rd replacement and the crocks are cracking in the same place every time.
MY REVIEW:
I bought this KitchenAid slow cooker in black and I really had to talk myself into buying it because it was so expensive. I kept telling myself you get what you pay for. Well, tonight I want to cry because I had just started a pork roast to cook overnight. After leaving the kitchen, my husband and I both heard a loud pop. I went back and found my slow cooker leaking liquid all over the place. I took out the crock, turned it upside-down and found a winding crack all along the bottom.
I've only owned my KitchenAid slow cooker for about 2 weeks and the crack occurred during the third time I used it. At this point I don't know if I want a replacement slow cooker directly from KitchenAid or whether I want to return the slow cooker to Amazon for a refund. If I got a replacement, I would be nervous to leave it on overnight or when I leave home, which is the whole benefit of having a slow cooker. Worrying about your slow cooker that has a retail price of $150 doesn't seem like a very good value to me.

First, I was a pressure cooker nut from before. I used my mother's 1930/40's Presto's until I couldn't get seals for them. When I saw this digital pressure cooker I bought it instantly. I loved it so much that I gave one to my daughter, my sis and my sis-in-law, (we're all foodies). I was cooking stuff I hadn't made in years. We ate like kings! All of a sudden, caput. I get online and search and right there on Amazon, Bobby Mac "Micronaut101" describes my very own problem! So no more trying to make the bloody thing work! I call the Cuisinart 800 number prepared to go the distance according to the reviews I've read and I describe my problem, how much I love the machine, how I've seen the problem reported on Amazon and therefore it's a known quality issue and I want a new machine. OK, she says, what's your address? No "did you send in a warranty" or anything else. Bingo, 7 - 10 days I'll have a new pressure cooker. How cool is that? Oh, and "We're sorry for the inconvenience. Have a great day." Yehaa! Let's hear it for Amazon and reviews!
[[editing review as of 6/4/09: pressure sensor wouldn't set pressure and pressure cooking wouldn't start. Cooker would get to boiling but pressure wouldn't lock the cooker and begin cooking. Little red button wouldn't come up to close opening. I would wiggle the button with a skewer or knife point to get it to pop up to close pressure hole. Hope this helps.]]
And I'm writing this so that others who may get one of those recalcitrant pressure cookers that slipped through the quality assurance check can know that they will get a new pressure cooker with the press of the number buttons. Cuisinart has decided to stand behind this one product, at least.
BTW, all of us are previous users of pressure cookers so we really appreciated the ability to sear the meat in the cooker. My family has used the Cuisinart cookbook for the pasta e Fagioli, Cuban Black Bean Soup, Chicken with Herb Dumplings and the "outstanding" Creamy Rice Pudding" And, in fact, the Rice pudding cooked so quickly that my sis didn't think it was done when the timer went off and over cooked it! Her second batch was superb. We also like Lorna Sass's "Cooking Under Pressure" and "Pressure Perfect"

Reduce time spent in the kitchen preparing meals with the help of this 6-quart electric pressure cooker--it cuts cooking times up to 70-percent when compared to traditional stovetop cooking methods. The unit traps steam inside, which builds up pressure to create hotter temperatures, and its tight seal locks in heat, moisture, and flavor, as well as vitamins and minerals for exceptionally healthy, great-tasting meals like soup, chili, and other one-dish entrees. It also works well for cheesecake and custard, because dessert should never be left off the menu. The unit's push-button controls and easy-to-read digital display eliminate guesswork, while its precision digital thermostat regulates temperatures. Choose from preprogrammed settings for high- or low-pressure cooking, browning, simmering, sauteing, and warming. For safety, the cooker must be fully locked for pressure to build, and it will remain locked until the pressure inside drops to zero. Other highlights include a 99-minute timer with an LED countdown display, cool-touch side handles, and a nonstick cooking pot that cleans up easily by hand or in the dishwasher. A dishwasher-safe trivet also comes included. Housed in brushed stainless steel, the 1000-watt pressure cooker measures 12-1/5 by 12-1/5 by 13-1/5 inches and carries a three-year limited warranty.

We have a family of 7 and required a larger crock pot. This one is excellent as it holds twice what we could normally get in our old crock pot. As the exterior is stainless steel, it does get hot. But the upside is that the cooking time is about the same if not better than with the smaller pots. Definetely worth the investmest if you are cooker for larger groups.

Stainless Steel Rice Cooker Model ME81 (Formerly ME8) - by Miracle Exclusives Review

Stainless Steel Rice Cooker Model ME81 (Formerly ME8) - by Miracle Exclusives
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We cook rice and grains frequently, as do many Asian-Americans. We have used plastic-bowl microwave vessels, aluminum & teflon pots, steam pressure cookers and several others over the past five plus decades. They all work, but each has a down side. For instance wait till your visitors or grand kids hear the hissing monster of a pressure cooker.

We feared aluminum toxicity, teflon ingestion, plastic leaching and plain uncertainty of what new epidemiologic research will unleash on us tomorrow. My wife and I have conveniently labeled our failing intellects as chronic "rice-in" toxicity. Forget age, it must be all that peeling cooking pot and rice!
The stainless steel Miracle is a reasonable answer, unless we find out in some distant future that stainless steel is also a hazard. Probably not. This cooker performs well and passes muster readily with us. We have not noted any spills or crusty rice paste sticking to the bottom. We do have the advantage of having cooked rice and grains for many years. But this is an easy skill to acquire if you learn to vary the amount of water used to suit the type of rice or grain. Don't lose heart too soon.
The pot washes easily if you soak it in water for a few hours -- and better still leave it overnight for your spouse to take care of tomorrow!
A vege tray comes with the cooker. It steams beans, peas and carrots well and to a ready-to-eat tender state.
I agree that a price of some $50.00 would have been better, but the convenience and safety are worth the added whimper while you pay the price. You could shop around and may be able to find a slightly lower price. And don't blow the savings on pricey coffee.

Crock-Pot SCRBC500-BS Duo Slow-Cooker Server Review

Crock-Pot SCRBC500-BS Duo Slow-Cooker Server
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I also have the big sister -- the Rival Smart-Pot Slow Cooker:
Rival SCVP609-SS 6-Quart Programmable Slow Cooking Crock Pot Cooker, Stainless Steel
Rival has a habit of making slow cookers that aren't all that slow -- check the Amazon reviews and they are consistent in letting you know these appliances (Rival's, that is) cook at too high of a temperature no matter what the setting. That means your food is done, and sometimes overdone, long before it should be. Grrrrr.
Rival has separated its appliance web sites -- Crock Pots are on their own separate site. Lo and behold, check on cooking tips for their crock pots and you get the following information under "Hints & Tips":
What's the difference between "Low" and "High" cooking?
Both High and Low stabilize at the same temperature, it is just a matter of how long it takes to reach the simmer point. Once food reaches the simmer point, total cook time is dependent on cut and weight of meat to reach the point of maximum flavor and texture potential. (Most dishes can be prepared on either High or Low.)
What are the typical cook times for Crock-Pot® slow cookers?
Typical cook time for Crock-Pot® slow cookers to reach simmer point (209°F):
Low: 7-8 to reach the simmer point
High: 3-4 hours to reach the simmer point
I can attest to the fact that Rival's slow cookers definitely cook way above 209 degrees! If you see boiling food or liquid, the temp is 212 degrees. Think about it -- that means you're really not slow cooking, you're boiling or stewing and you might disappointed with the end results. With that said, I like this smaller duo version because its capacity in each crock is 2.5 quarts, perfect for the smaller family and very handy to cook a main dish plus a side dish or dessert. Note this is not "programmable" in any sense other than High, Low and Warm settings for each pot. You'll have to watch the clock yourself, but considering the fact that everything cooks faster than you expect, I guess that's pretty much a given.
There are some dishes that work well in the Rival brand of slow cookers and some that turn out to be disasters. You'll probably be able to find out for yourself but in general, stews, soups, sauces, any kind of recipe that calls for long stove top or oven cooking will do well in the Rival -- but it will be ready a few hours sooner than you might think. Vegetables definitely need a much shorter cooking time so I add them about two hours before the end of my estimated meal completion. I've even cooked an apple crisp in the Duo and it turned out well.
To sum up, this Duo is handy for smaller recipes or for two dishes, but the Rivals cook too quickly, so keep that in mind. I gave it 3 stars because I now understand to cook all recipes for a shorter time and the device is very convenient for two smaller recipes at once.

Ideal for holiday entertaining, buffet-style dinner parties, or other social occasions, this double slow-cooker server features two 2-1/2-quart pots for cooking up anything from vegetarian chili, lentil soup, and beef stew to tuna-noodle casserole, chicken curry, and more. Two separate control knobs make it easy to independently adjust the heat from low to high or warm temperature settings for each pot. The unit's round-shaped, stoneware cooking pots can be used to cook and serve a main dish in one and a side dish in the other, can be removed from their heating base for use as serving dishes at the dining-room table, or can be used to store leftovers, once cooled down, in the refrigerator for later, all of which means less dirty pots and pans filling the sink at the end of the day. Two serving spoons and matching glass lids with stay-cool knobs come included. Other highlights include individual spoon notches, integrated side handles on the removable pots, stay-cool integrated side handles on the heating base, a stainless-steel/black hybrid finish, and four feet that lift the serving unit up, keeping tables or countertop surfaces safe from the heat. The slow-cooker server measures approximately 9 by 25 by 13 inches.

I've had this Crockpot for about 3 weeks and all my dishes are coming out great. My lid is made of glass, so I'm not sure which model the other user got that has a plastic lid. Also, my lid doesn't rattle, either. In fact, it's nice and sturdy and easy to clean and use. If you can only afford a basic slowcooker (like me), this is a great choice. I really love it and have been having a great time using it.

West Bend 84905 5-Quart Oblong-Shaped Slow Cooker Review

West Bend 84905 5-Quart Oblong-Shaped Slow Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the best small appliance I have ever had. I have had it 20 years or so. I cook everything in it: pot roasts, pork roasts, stew, pulled pork, beans, etc. I have purchased about 8 of them over the years for wedding gifts, college graduation gifts, Xmas, etc.

There are two main reasons I love this so much. One is the versitility of the heat control. I hate crockpots because all you get is low and high! Give me a break, who cooks like that?? These have settings from 1-5, almost as many as a stove burner. I can brown my stew or roast on 5 then turn it down to 3 or halfway between 3 & 4 or 4 depending on how long I want to be away from the house or want it to cook. The base doubles as a griddle by itself. Takes up very little counter and storage space. The pot goes into the oven or on the stove if you need or want it to. The pot and lid go into the dishwasher, although I ususally just give a quick wash with hot soapy water and wipe off the base. The other reason I love it is it is small and lightweight. No heavy monster crockpots to handle, try to lift full of food and then try and wash!
I have the older model of this cooker that is 6 quarts. At the time I purchased it you had the choice of 4 or 6 qt size. After 20 years I need to replace it, although it still works perfectly, the teflon pot lining is scratched and the teflon coating on the base(griddle) is flaking. But after 20 years of using it 3-5 times a week, its certainly held up wonderfully. I am now purchasing two more, one for me and one as a wedding gift! My only regret is that they no longer make the 6 quart in this model, only the 5 qt. I would recommend it without question!! Enjoy!

Also, most smaller crock pots have only one setting, but this one has three (high, low, and keep warm). I purchased this crock pot for two reasons: mulled cider at the office and overnight Irish oatmeal. For the price (under $10), this was money very well spent and it handles those two tasks perfectly. Buyers must remember that this has only one setting (low). I plan on using it for soups and stews. I would not use it for anything dry (but then again, I wouldn't use my other huge crock pot for anything dry either) because past experience has shown drier applications to cook unevenly in crock pots. In addition, it is PERFECT for two reasonable servings.

I don't know why the other reviewer rated this versatile slow cooker so badly? I have used mine for over a year for roasts, whole chickens, chili, soups, etc. and all are done to perfection on "low". Sounds to me like the other reviewer had a defective one. This slow cooker really IS versatile! I have the stainless steel model, not the black aluminum one. You can slow cook all day or speed things up by using medium or high temperature settings. I will replace mine immediately if it wears out...don't know what I would do without it! I use it almost every day.

I'm a guy and have done only basic cooking and even less with a slow cooker. So please take this into account.
I purchased this cooker even thought it had no reviews because most of the other cookers had such a wide variety of star ratings . . . I took a risk . . . and I'm not disappointing.
This slow cooker is all metal, except of course for the lid which is tempered glass and the pot which is ceramic or whatever they are made of. Even the handle on the top of the lid is metal as are the handles on the side of the cooker and seem very solid. None of this cheap plastic with a shiny silver coating stuff. The pot itself is obviously heavy and durable; and the handles on the pot are conveniently placed and formed making it very easy to lift out of the cooking container without burning yourself even when completely full.
The electronic controls are very easy to use with the typical warm, low, medium and high settings and a two hour automatic warm setting after the cooking cycle is finished, and a push of the timer setting button will increase the cook time for 30 minutes while in the cooking cycle. The LCD panel for the controls lights up when any of the buttons are pushed to make reading the settings easier and an icon of a cooking pot turns on once the slow cooker is actually cooking.
This slow cooker is very attractive and would compliment most any kitchen. The overall impression of the slow cooker is that it is of high quality and sound construction. I am looking forward to many years use of this slow cooker but if any problems crop up during the next several months I will edit this post to let ya'll know.
So far I have cooked a whole five pound chicken which cooked to perfection in eight hours on low, and a roast which also cooked to tender perfection in eight hours (even though it wasn't a high quality cut).
So in conclusion I would highly recommend this slow cooker on the basis of the limited use I have had with it cooking two meals.

Crock Pots worked great. My wife loves the 3 quart capacity versus the 2.5 quart that most trio buffet servers are. Have two of them. Ordered Rival but the name brand is Crock Pot on the buffet servers. Did not realize the two companies are the same. Only minor thing is that the spoons were all the same. Would be nice if one or two of them were slotted so the juice would drain through. The really disappointing thing is the Crock Pot and Rival Company do not sale any slotted spoons.

I bought this after my larger sized Rival had the handle come off of the lid while cooking. This seems to be a much better made cooker. I love the probe function, which allows you to cook until the meat is done then automatically warm without second guessing. The controls are easy to read and push. I tested the unit and it heated to the proper temperatures for low and high. No overcooking or handles coming off. I predict if Rival continues to sell cheap junk that HB will soon become the number one slow cooker, a worthy rival to Rival.

Crock-Pot 38501-W 5-Quart Round Smart-Pot Slow Cooker, White Review

I'm an engineer, not a cook, hence the appeal of a crockpot (I can't boil water without burning it...)
I had an old Rival crockpot that worked well for many years (manual, round, and small). It broke, so I bought a 5-quart Smart-Pot at Costco this past weekend. I noticed it ran very hot (top of outside WILL burn your hands if touched!), so decided to test it.
I filled the unit 3/4 full of water and placed it on the high setting (4 hours) and measured the temperature after several hours with a thermometer. Water temperture was about 215 to 220 degrees F. I then repeated the process for the low temperature setting, but the temperature was about the same!
This disturbed me, so I placed a Kill-A-Watt (very handy device to measure electrical power consumption and wattage for electrical devices) between the pot and the outlet. Sure enough the unit draws the same power on the low and high settings (about 245W). Occasionally on the low settings the unit would pulse the power (this is probably how they get the lower temperature; by modulating the power, rather than using separate, and more expensive, heating elements in the manual units). The problem is that sometimes the low setting does pulse the power, and sometimes it does not. Even on the warm setting I found that occasionally the device will draw the maximum power without pulsing. It is apparent to me that they have a controller problem with the SmartPots that is overdriving the temperature. The units themselves run very hot, and I wonder if the excessive temperature causes controller problems.
I am going to return and try another one, but I suspect I will get precisely the same results, in which case I'll avoid the Rival brand entirely. This is an obvious problem that many people have complained about over the past year or so (viz. the comments), so they have either a major defect, or severe quality control problems, both of which shoudl warrant some kind of response from them. I am disappointed. If the second unit works correctly, I'll post on my success.
Interestingly, Rival makes a separate controller for an older crockpot to allow timing and temperature control (same idea of pulsing the heater current, and varying the duty cycle to change the effective heating capability --a perfectly legitimate approach), and it is inexpensive ($13-$15 on the street).

Amazon sells this crock pot through Target/ITC. I bought it at a local Target store for the same price.
Didn't want to pay a lot for a crock pot because we'll use it infrequently. Wife says Rival is best. I went with the wife's recommendation.
When I got home, I was sad to see that Rival is part of "The Holmes Group." I've sworn off Holmes' products because of their ventilation fans whereby they charge you money to get a warranty replacement and it's rigged so the charge plus shipping is the same amount as a new fan. Essentially, this means, their warranty is not only worthless but it is a scam.
I don't know if warranty will be handled in a similarly dismal fashion should we have problems with this Rival crock pot. Nevertheless, wife wants a basic Rival crock pot so I'll give in and accept a "Holmes" product this one time for her sake.
We've used it only once so far. I will say the lid fits tightly and doesn't have a gasket because it doesn't seem to need one. I had a 4 pound roast + 1.5 quarts of liquids in the thing and over a 10 hour cook cycle, the liquid level only dropped about 1/8 of an inch. I think it's important that a crock pot hold moisture in. This one seems to do it well.
Cooking on low for 10 hours, the liquids just barely bubbled slightly as the food barely simmered--just as I expected. So, I'd have to say it seems to maintain temperature accurately.
This crock pot has just a good old reliable off/warm/low/high switch. I avoided Rival's digital models. Some Rival digital models don't allow much actual temperature control--like you can't manually switch from a cook temp to a keep warm temp. It's all forced upon you when you choose a cooking time. Rival has another digital model called the "countdown timer" and this seemed like a good thing until I asked about what happens during a power outage. Know what happens? It shuts down. So, with Rival's digital models, if your power blips off for a few seconds while you're gone for the day, you might come home to rotten uncooked food. Here at our house, we have such power blips about 10 to 15 times per year. I have a bread maker that I use frequently. It has no provision to cope with power outages. If the power blips off a few seconds, the cycle stops and the bread is ruined. There's no way to set it so that it restarts where it left off. It has to restart from the beginning. I have sworn I won't get another digital cooking appliance that is going to go dead due to a momentary power outage. So, this basic crock pot with its good old standard rotary off/warm/low/high switch is totally immune to power blips. It will just go back to work when the power comes back on.
I heard a "crack" sound after about 4 hours. I was afraid I suffered ceramic crock damage as many people seem to complain about. Most cracks seem to be in the Kitchen Aid and Hamilton Beach product reviews. Nevertheless, I thought I was a victim. It was a loud crack sound. Really was. But, I've examined the crockery insert (liner) and it seems to be unharmed. Don't know what the noise was. Maybe there's a practically invisible hariline crack that will become more readily apparent later on. I'll watch closely and post back if that's the case. Maybe the cracking sound only indicated the relief of some benign stressors inherent in the stamped metal housing?
Like I say, I'll post if there's a crock defect that shows up later on. The crockery liner is so heavy, it would cost a lot to ship it back to Rival if they demanded such in a warranty claim. It's so heavy, I'll bet it would cost at least 3/4 as much as an entirely new crock pot just to ship the broken liner to Rival. Reports are that Kitchen Aid covers the entire cost of replacements for defective crockery liners. I hope Rival will do the same and I hope they don't resort to flim-flam warranty scams like they do with their Holmes ventilation fans.
So, this model is a basic crock pot with a basic switch and I presume it utilizes the basic bi-metal thermostat design that is common in lots of appliances. Therefore, unless the Chinese factories really screwed things up, this Rival crock pot should last as long as those old Rival crock pots that seem to have favorably impressed my wife.

I'm single and live by myself, and I have found that this Crock Pot is an excellent way to have a really nice meal waiting for me when I get home from work. I can make enough to last a few meals, but the Crock Pot works great even with a smaller amount of food -- you just want to make sure you've got plenty of liquid in there. I use my Crock Pot all the time, and it has worked perfectly from the moment I took it out of the box. It is also quite easy to clean; even if you forget to clean it right away, a bit of a soak with hot soapy water does the trick.
