Tiger PDH-B30U Hot Water Dispenser Kettle w/ 3.2 Quart Capacity Review

Tiger PDH-B30U Hot Water Dispenser Kettle w/ 3.2 Quart Capacity
Average Reviews:

Many Asian households have this appliance but non-Asians seem to not know about it. This is a convenient way to always have boiling hot water at hand for making tea or instant ramen and instant soups. While the typical "American" electric tea kettle requires you to plug in and boil water each time it is turned on (thereby necessitating a wait of at least 3-5 minutes), this water heater boils water and keeps it boiling hot for days until you dispense all of it and have to refill/reboil it. I have found it very useful to have a personal water heater at my office desk (where it is the envy of all my colleagues - yet somehow they are resistant to buying one themselves due to cultural suspicion), and also one at home. One caveat is that since it is constantly plugged in, it may use up a lot of electricity. Also you have to be careful of children accidentally dispensing it and scalding themselves (this model has a "lock" button). Lastly, you should never immerse the appliance in water and it is certainly not dishwashable. The Tiger model is not cheap but it is a high quality, well-made appliance that will last for years.

Zojirushi EB-CC15 Indoor Electric Grill Review

Zojirushi EB-CC15 Indoor Electric Grill
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros:
- non-stick surface makes it extremely easy to clean. Charred food debris just slides off the surface.
- base of the unit is made of plastic and acts as an insulator so there is no need to put anything under it to protect your tabletop.
- safety mechanism built in so that grill cannot be operated without drip pan.
- takes only 10 minutes to heat up fully.
- grill is a heavy cast iron so holds heat well. I have seen other similar grills by companies like Sanyo and only Zojurushi uses a heavy cast iron grill.
- heats very well. Grills meat very fast.
- no smoke generated- not sure why, but there just isn't any.
Cons:
- none so far.
Notes:
- if you want to grill vegetables, I'd recommend coating them with some oil before putting them on the grill, otherwise the veges tend to get dry.
- power cable is short, so make sure you have an extension cable handy.

Reco International Garlic Baker Review

Reco International Garlic Baker
Average Reviews:

I take the garlic baker, soak it in water for a few minutes, then cut the top third off of a glove of garlic (just enough to expose the little pods inside) then brush it with extra virgin olive oil, sea salt, and fresh cracked pepper, then bake it in the oven on about 375 for 30 minutes. When it's done, you take the garlic out (allowing to cool) and you can just squeeze the garlic out of the little sections, because it gets reduced to the consistency of butter. You can squeeze it out onto bread, spread it around, and throw the bread back in the oven for a minute with the broiler on, and you've got healthy, simple, and delicious garlic bread.

World Cuisine 13-Inch Diameter Tibos Electric Crepe Maker (10103) Review

World Cuisine 13-Inch Diameter Tibos Electric Crepe Maker (10103)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After 6 months of Sunday Crepe breakfasts for the family I now regularly get excellent Crepes (almost) with this Crepe maker without resorting to the professional Krampouz. As usual you have to practice, practice, practice.
Here are a few recommendations:
Ditch the plastic crepe helper. It's similar to the foaming helpers in Espresso machines, it gets total novices over the initial contact hump but quickly stops you from making any decent progress with the product (Crepe). The tool creates a messy experience and creates uneven crepes.
Second ditch the scraper. It's very hard to get good crepes if you prefer the very liquid kind of dough (which I like). Instead get a round Birchwood scraper. They tend to be larger as well ( 8 inches or so). The round surface allows you to evenly spread the dough ( AMAZON sells them )
Third ditch the spatula. It's simply to short. If you make a real crepe, a really thin crepe the provided spatula will just pierce through the crepe when you lift it to turn or take off the crepe maker. I got a 23 inch Birchwood spatula and am very happy with it.
Fourth: There is no magic to crepe if you follow my advice, use this great crepe maker and practice, practice, practice. I use a simple crepe recipe. You need to play with the temperature and times a bit. My crepes are done within 50s on the first side and 30s for the other side. Experiment and watch videos on the internet.

The Camp Chef SPG-90B has been a perfect choice for a camp stove and the BBQ box makes a good combination on top of this 3-burner stove. It is much sturdier than it looks in photos. It sets up in 2 minutes, and really IS portable despite having 3 burners. We wanted to look at one in person, but couldn't find a retailer anywhere in the area so we took a chance on buying this on the internet. Delivery was FAST! However, the photo on the internet shows a rack underneath and the description clearly says that it comes with a rack underneath. FYI - It doesn't. You have to buy one separately and it's $20-$30 from other sources. We do not regret this purchase though.

I received the double set of the Pasta Express this morning. I was extremely disappointed w/ the packaging of the set. I received the set in a plain cardboard box w/ the directions placed inside of one of the tubes that I cant even get open. How do I know that this hasnt been used before? Where is the original box (as shown in the picture)? Dont waste your time w/ this product because you cant even tell if it is brand new or not. Presto 06000 6 Quart Kitchen Kettle Review

Presto 06000 6 Quart Kitchen Kettle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought one at Walmart last year. I use it pretty often, but mostly for making popcorn. Turn temp to 350, put a couple-three tablespoons of peanut oil in the bottom, and then when the oil heats up throw in 1/3 to 1/2 cup of popcorn. Put the cover on and keep the pot moving while the corn pops. When the corn has just about stopped popping, turn the heat off and pour the popcorn into a bowl. Butter, salt and eat. YUM!
I've deep-fried scallops in it, steamed vegetables, cooked rice, made soup and even baked potatoes. The thing works great! I wasn't going to write a review until I saw Alton Brown talk some trash about it on Good Eats. I got pretty defensive about my humble Presto cooker! He was doing a silly episode about "man food" like corn dogs and thin, square hamburgers. Well, when Mr. Brown was explaining how to fry the corn dogs he said (while holding a Presto mutlti-cooker) that a pot with an heating element on the outside of the bottom wasn't a good idea because first the element had to heat the pot and then it had to heat up the oil. Too slow. After that he displayed three home-use rectangular fryers with immersion type heating elements. He said they were also better because they each had cooking baskets and break-away magnetic cords. He picked the one with the digital controls, while implying that this was somehow better than the manual rotary temp control.
I don't know if A. B. gets paid for product placement on his show, but I really thought he was being disingenuous regarding the Presto "pot." First of all, about the heating element on the bottom of the Presto cooker: During the frying demonstration, Mr. Brown had some text placed over the screen that said that if you didn't have a special electric fryer, that a pot on the stove-top would work fine. Isn't that interesting? What the heck is a pot on the stove, but just a heating element on the outside of a pot that heats up the pot and then the oil inside? That's exactly what he was criticizing the Presto kettle about. What gives? Secondly, the Presto cooker DOES TOO have a magnetic break-away electric cord to keep the unit from tipping when the cord is yanked by accident. Also, the Presto cooker DOES TOO come with a frying-steaming basket, which Brown implied it didn't have. Nya, nya, nya! See, I can be just as immature as Alton Brown!
I don't know if the rectangular fryers are really better, but I'm sure they cost a lot more. My Presto cooker was $26.85 at Walmart. I keep it in a lower cabinet - it doesn't take up much space there. I pull it out when I need it. It's inexpensive, easy to use, and simple. When we go to Maine in August, I'm allowed to take only one of my counter-top appliances. So, I just take the Presto cooker with me. Normally, I cook steel cut oats in a small bowl, sitting in water, in a slow cooker (a bain marie - sort of - found the idea here [link deleted]) I can do the same thing with the Presto cooker. And I have a pot with me on vacation that I can do so much more with.
One last thing. With my slow cooker I use a plug-in timer called a Rival Smart-Part. But it's not rated to control the wattage of the Presto multi-cooker. I found a heavy-duty programmable digital timer that I use to turn the Presto cooker off and on automatically. This device really allows me to use the Presto cooker like a slow cooker, without over-cooking stews and such when I am out of the house all day. The Presto multi-cooker is a terrific appliance! Buy one now, and don't believe everything you see on TV!
Flash Update! Here is another reason to buy a Presto multi-cooker: I'm making a beef stew with red wine tonight. What a mess browning the stew beef! I have a 3 quart Wagner cast-iron chicken fryer, and this is what I used to brown the beef chuck cubes. These days the meat hasn't been aged much, and so it is very difficult to brown properly. I managed to do it in batches, but the stove-top got pretty messy by the time I was done. I put the browned meat, vegetables, and garlic into the Presto cooker ( I made sure to deglaze the chicken fryer with wine and include all the tasty bits) and continued to cook the stew. And then I could proceed to clean up the stove-top while the beef stew simmered away in a different part of the kitchen. I am very pleased not to have to clean up all that oil spatter after dinner!

Stovetop Smoker Review

I just tried my stovetop smoker and was amazed at the results. I've used a large outdoor smoker for years, and was skeptical about the stovetop smoker. I used it to prepare chicken breasts, and they cooked fast and were juicy and tender, and had just the right amount of smoke flavor. I'm looking forward to using my stovetop smoker for seafood and vegetables. It's a great way to add flavor to food, and a very healthy way to cook.
The smoker is constructed from heavy steel and is well made. I could smell the smoke as the food cooked, but it wasn't intense and there was no smoke in the house. I'll still use my outdoor smoker for batch cooking or for smoking large birds, but expect to get a lot of use out of the stovetop smoker.

Bayou Classic 1175 30-Quart Stainless Steel Turkey Fryer Kit with Perforated Basket
Average Reviews:

Bought this unit primarily for brewing beer; the turkey fryer parts are a bonus for me. The burner delivers a lot of heat to the pot, and there is plenty of regulation available for the burner. However, I'm disappointed in the thinness of the pot material as I hoped for a more sturdy pot. Some apparent tousling during shipment caused a significant dent in the pot, but I was able to pop it out. Bottom line, though, this is a terrific value, about 40% lower than if I had purchased all components separately.

this thing barely fits in my oven so it can make a big big stew. i have loved my 4 quart schlemmertopf clay pot but sometimes it's a little small for what i wnt to cook. when i saw the romertopf 6 1/2 quart i had to have it. try this: 2pound roast, 1-2 inches of water, salt, pepper, garlic, basil. cook in oven at 350 for 1 hour. add two large russet potatos cubed, 1 pound carrots, one large red onion, one large bunch of celery, all chopped, and one 16 oz. jar of a good marinara sauce (h.e.b.'s 2 dollar version is great). add water to about 1 inch from top of pot. cook for another 2 hours at 350. you don't even have to check it. this is stew like mom used to make!!!!

Magneflux Portable Induction Cooktop Includes non-stick finish pan(ENERGY EFFICIENT) Review

Magneflux Portable Induction Cooktop Includes non-stick finish pan(ENERGY EFFICIENT)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
An induction cooker is different from a standard electric coil since the cooking surface remains relatively cool, being largely heated by the pan; the surrounding surface will remain cool to the touch. Instead of the heat loss we recognize as a warm or hot kitchen, the heat is 70-90% efficiently directed to the pan and little heat is lost to the air except from the hot pan. The cooker requires ferrous (metal)cookware that a magnet will stick to; aluminum or glass will not work unless a special heating plate is put on the cooktop that will transfer the heat to the non-ferrous material. The reason for this is that the cooker has an electromagnetic coil that creates an electrical field, which in turn causes the pot to heat up by the induced current since the cookware will not be as good a conductor as the copper coil in the cooktop. All instructions make particular note for those with a pacemaker or defibrillator to not use this sort of cooking method since it could potentially interfere with the devices.
This induction cooker is 1800 watts, which to my understanding is the most powerful that can be used on a 110V circuit. There are actually 2 models; they have the same feature set, but this one has stainless steel trim and comes with a non-stick pan, and the other is an all black finish and no pan. It doesn't have a built in timer, but comes with a battery powered digital timer. This, in some ways, is better since you can keep the timer near you in other rooms as a reminder. It has 9 power levels arranged in 3 groups: low, medium and high; each having 3 sets of temperatures. The temperature settings range from 150 degrees F to a high of 500 degrees F. The controls are true touch type, not blister type press pads, and are sensitive to a light touch. There are, as in most, 2 circles indicated for pan placement and it is supposed to sense the correct pan size, the minimum being a 5 inch diameter, the maximum being about 9 inches. The unit looks and feels like a quality item. The glass top is easily cleaned with the included microfiber cloth. Like most units the cooling fan can be heard and remains on for a minute or so after it is off for cooling the coils.
It seems to have even heat and is every bit as responsive as gas. It is different cooking with however. At the lowest heat it pulses to keep the temperature constant, which can take some getting used to. Again, all units do this; it's the nature of the beast. The cooktop remains cool to the touch and heats very quickly. No, I have not done the boiling water test, but my stir fry turned out fine with no drama.
I got this as an introduction to this type of cooking, so I can't comment on other units. I am very happy with the build quality and would purchase it again.
UPDATE 9 September: I've had more of a chance to use this unit and while I still like it and feel that it is well worth the money, there are a few caveats:
The low temperature settings are 150, 175 and 200, and the medium begins with 250. For something like rice that depends upon steaming, 200 is too low and 250 tends to be just a bit too high. By finessing the controls a well cooked rice can be done, but it would be easier if there were more control over the temperature. On the other hand, I continue to be impressed with the immediate control of temperature and its power to take on things like browning meat. It was easy to make golden translucent sauteed onions and brown meat for an excellent goulash; but because of the power I had to be careful to watch the liquid level. Although there is definitely a learning curve, all meals prepared thus far have been quite good. The pan that comes with this unit is a very nice non-stick one. It does not come with a lid, but a Calphalon 12 inch glass lid fits it perfectly. For some reason the bottom isn't flat so oil tends to run to the sides. This hasn't been an issue with most things since not much oil is needed with non-stick, and sauces have been fine.
The only unit that I have seen that has infinite settings is the Viking, which is also 1800 watts, but costs $500. It is also the only one that I have seen that has a rotary control, which is far more precise and faster to use. Before you get put off from a touch pad though,it has its virtues, such as ease of clean up and no mechanical components to fail, but is a bit slower to change things quickly, such as changing quickly when something is boiling over. I hope that this information will be useful to those trying to sort things out.
As a final note, I also bought a Viking unit and have found it to be easier to manage the heat with the rotary control knob. Although the noise from the fan in the magneflux didn't bother me, the Viking is also much quieter if that is a consideration for you. Other than boiling water or heating oil perhaps, don't be misled by cooking speed claims. Once the pot/pan is at the right temperature it will take as long to cook as any other conventional method. Its strength is with the immediate responsiveness to control and the area surrounding it remaining relatively cool.

Nostalgia KPM-508 Old-Fashioned Kettle Popcorn Maker Review

Nostalgia KPM-508 Old-Fashioned Kettle Popcorn Maker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The biggest issue of this popper is that unpopped kernels tend to fly out of the container, like hot air poppers which blow many of the good kernels out. You should monitor it and shake the handle when popping starts to minimize waste. Quality gourmet popcorn like Orville Redenbacher's is a larger kernel and will yield bigger, fluffier popcorn per batch.
Naturally, you will have to wipe out the inside before the first use to get any dust and loose styrofoam out. Then rinse and dry the kettle, plug the kettle in, slip on the mount, and screw in the handle counterclockwise.
Instructions say to run the kettle empty 3-5 mintues just to heat up BEFORE you add 2 teaspsoons of oil and popcorn. The instructions get fuzzy at this point. It says, "... add _ cup of popcorn..." Cup of what? I called and found out just one scoop - equal to 1/4 cup. Don't double it or you risk burning and stuck kernels. It yields 2 quarts which is pretty good. Measuring spoons are provided for oil and popcorn, but no scoop. But the door and opening tray should make popcorn retrieval easy enough.
The sound of the motor spinning is much quieter than hot air poppers which sound like rattling blow dryers. This should let you make more popcorn mid movie with less distraction. This unit is more work for popcorn. However, we live with the trouble because we want theater quality popcorn, right?
As I understand, theater's use coconut oil. I use peanut oil because of the high burn temperature, it will never smoke and hydrogonate. You can make batch, after batch, of delicious popcorn, but sooner or later, you have to turn it off and clean the kettle. Unplug the unit, wait for it to cool, unscrew the handle, unplug the kettle and remove it. Then a nice soak in hot soapy water. Again, done for the love of popcorn.
There is even an overhead light to help you see the popcorn, but this appears to be an ordinary lamp. It is decorative and in no way keeps the popcorn warm. Just like the wheels which are decorative and do not spin.
The unit is fairly large, and takes up under 9 x 12 inches of counter space. Roughly 18.5" tall. Easily, twice the size of a hot air popper. Home theater owners won't mind the space, otherwise, you may need to make room.
It normally comes in the nostalgic classic red, but I have seen green available, and I bought mine in a pleasant black. Certainly, more trouble than normal for popcorn, but the quality is great.
Health conscious people may bally hoo the oil aspect, but that depends on how healthful an oil you use. Healthful fat in your diet, like olive and peanut oils, are better than no fat at all.
In short, if you are a popcorn lover who tires of the over salted bag popcorn, the dry hot air popcorn, or the burned microwave popcorn, this is for you. But, it's a lot more mess. Just remember to clean it regularly to keep it from smoking. Otherwise, start stocking up on Jiffy Pop.
