(More customer reviews)I purchased two of these roasters to cook Christmas dinner. It made the best ham, and pork I have cooked in my life, moist and hot and once it was seasoned and clicked on it practically cooked itself.
HOWEVER EVEN THOUGH I give it five stars for being a fantastic extra portable oven
Nesco sends this item out in need of being pre-used before cooking in for the first time.
Had my son not used it the week before to make sausage and meatballs Christmas dinner would have been ruined!! AND my house would have reeked of burnt plastic!!! The initial odor was quite bad .
The oven took over 7 hrs. plugged in outside to burn off this odor. I have had toaster ovens, coffepots toasters, electric fry pans etc. and pulled them out of the box washed and used them instantly! Nesco would do well to burn the oven off on their own site. I called customer service and let "poor nice Hazel" have it....hopefully she will pass along my suggestion and get a promotion to boot!
Also, I have no garage and had it been a rainy day I would not have had a ventilated covered area to burn it off in. I do see another review where this was an issue for the man who bought it... if you read this I agree but I wish you had kept the oven its all up hill after burn off! YES it is true, they do state in the directions to run oven before using for the first time BUT this is inside the box. This could be a real deal breaker for someone who didn't open it up at least a day before they needed it!
Bottom line it is a fantastic product. Easy clean up & versatile can be used to cook & keep food warm, use indooror or on hot days why not cook outdoors , good looking , roomy, like having an extra oven only when you need it, and it even stores neatly within itself. Yes I can say it does what I need quite well!

(More customer reviews)This is a convenient,inexpensive, high quality, easy to clean up cooking unit with a great instruction and recipe book included. More recipes are on the NESCO website as well.
I do not know how to cook. If it weren't for my wife, I would have starved by now. When my son was small, and my wife was sick, he would beg her to get better so he wouldn't have to eat my cooking, which he likened to rubber chicken.
But a few years ago, my wife's aunt gave us a 6 Quart NESCO COOKWELL roaster and voila! I can cook meals that even my son would enjoy.
This is probably the gift for anyone living on their own for the first time, like a college student, since it is extremely easy to prepare and cook healthful, delicious meals EVERY TIME.
If you follow instructions in the enclosed recipe booklet, you can't make a bad meal! My favorite is the lemon pepper chicken with linguine.
The best part is that the COOKWELL roaster pan insert is removable, is used to serve the food and cleans up really easily. The electrical heating part never sees soap and water, since it only serves to surround the cookwell roasting pan insert with a "circle of heat".
This is not a crock pot, although you can set it up as such. Cooking times are usually 45 minutes to an hour and around 350 degrees.
EVERY student going away to college should have one of these. They are easily stored, cleaned and provide inexpensive and healthy meals. And even a lousy cook like myself becomes a gormet chef. You can use the recipes and instructions provided in the booklet that comes with the cookwell or if you are more experienced, like my wife, anything is possible. THIS IS A WINNER!

(More customer reviews)After using the roaster only once, the liner was very difficult to clean. I noticed the rim of the liner showed signs of rust. I returned the item to Amazon. Upon going to the Nesco website, I learned you can purchase a better quality liner for an additional $18. That would be OK if I were using the oringinal liner for a couple of years, but not after only one use. Love the cooker itself, poor quality on the liner.

(More customer reviews)I use two of these regularly and have given a number of them as gifts to people I really like.
Most whole chickens in the market are FAT, and this drains the fat off the vertical chicken very effectively. Also, all the juices are retained in the dripping pan. When the chicken is nice and crisp, we enjoy it but we put the dripping pan into the fridge. In the morning, we skim off and discard the hardened fat and freeze the nonfat drippings in a baggie to flavor future chicken dishes.
I've used the vertical roasters that are painted black, but the black paint eventually puffs and peels. This unit's stainless steel is durable, hygienic, and easy to wash.

(More customer reviews)I bought this a couple of years ago to help with the Thanksgiving load on the oven. But now we wouldn't cook a turkey any other way, and I love it for big batches of soup and chili. The turkey cooks in far less time than in an oven, and it's wonderfully moist and flavorful. It makes huge batches of soup that are not possible in my crock pot, so is invaluable for those extra large recipes. And it's very easy to transport.
I really appreciate having the oven available for other dishes when I use my roaster. And when my oven was being repaired ,we used the roaster in it's place, and I was pleasantly surprised at what I could cook in it! I just used it dry, and put my baking pans inside, and my dishes came out just as good as when using the conventional oven. It's large enough to easily accomodate a 9x13 pan.
The one big drawback is you have to really watch the temperature. It gets hotter than you set the dial, so I compensate and cook at a lower temperature. It can be annoying at first, but once you get used to your roaster, it's not so big of a deal. But be prepared until you know what your roaster will do. And the removable pan you cook in is very big and not very nonstick, so can be a pain to wash unless you have an extra large sink. Spraying it down in the sink while it's still hot does help with clean-up, but it's never easy to wash. It does take up a lot of counter space while using it.
I have the buffet inserts, and they work great for taco/nacho parties. I put the hot items in their own compartment (meat, beans, cheese sauce), and they stay hot the entire time. And, again, it's portable, so you can take it to an event to use this way. If we have a big crowd at the holidays and serve family style, I put in the buffet insert after the turkey is done, fill them with the hot sides (potatoes, stuffing, veggies, etc), and it keeps those 3 hot dishes hot through out the entire meal. Very handy!! If you do a web search, you'll find a ton of great ideas and recipes for your roaster. There are very dedicated roaster users out there that have great information that I recommend you look at.
Like I said, I initially got it for holiday meals, but find I'm reaching for it for so many other events. Just watch the temperature!
