this thing barely fits in my oven so it can make a big big stew. i have loved my 4 quart schlemmertopf clay pot but sometimes it's a little small for what i wnt to cook. when i saw the romertopf 6 1/2 quart i had to have it. try this: 2pound roast, 1-2 inches of water, salt, pepper, garlic, basil. cook in oven at 350 for 1 hour. add two large russet potatos cubed, 1 pound carrots, one large red onion, one large bunch of celery, all chopped, and one 16 oz. jar of a good marinara sauce (h.e.b.'s 2 dollar version is great). add water to about 1 inch from top of pot. cook for another 2 hours at 350. you don't even have to check it. this is stew like mom used to make!!!!

Reco International Classic Romertopf 2-5 Pounds Clay Baker Review

Clay bakers like this were used during the millenia, and still are great for today. Truly a time tested product! Why is called Romertopf? Because Romans used to cook in those. (Romertopf="Roman pot" in German).
I used Romertopfe for years, this one is small, good for two people.
You may consider various sizes for different purposes.
This baker, in case you are not familiar with, goes for 5-10 min in water, in order to soak it, and than to oven, but not preheated. The temperature needs to raise gradually. Food cooks in its own juices, if you choose so, but you can also cook stews, and deserts, or even bake cakes, of course.
The food cooked in Romertopf has amazing flavor, there is truly a difference in dishes cooked the contemporary way, and in this baker. I recommend this product highly. If you want the flavor of dishes of a bistro, this pot for sure will do.

Schlemmertopf Classic Glazed Clay Cooker, Small Review

Schlemmertopf Classic Glazed Clay Cooker, Small

The Schlemmertopf itself is great. The size we ordered is a small, good for cooking portions for two people, especially if you're on a health-conscious diet; otherwise you might want to order the medium one.
Cooking with this is a breeze, and it's very healthy - no need to use oil or cooking spray to get juicy meats. Just soak the lid in water for 10 minutes, place your meats/veggies inside, season to your liking, and let cook... done!
Our only complaint is that when this item arrived from Amazon, a corner piece of the lid was broken off (About a 2 inch piece I would say). It's not a deal breaker, though... we were tempted to send it back for a replacement, but decided it's not worth the time and effort. The Schlemmertopf still works just fine with the missing corner, no difference whatsoever.
The Schlemmertopf was recommended by my wife's mom, who lives in Europe and has been cooking with it for quite some time.
All in all, an A+++ product.

I used this item for the first time at Thanksgiving. What a wonderful clay baker it is!! If you're vegetarian, or vegan, or even if you're cooking other stuff, this is an amazing "appliance" to have. I made a seitan dish (for those who are not familiar with seitan, it's a meat substitute that's really expensive when purchased already prepared, but when you make it at home it's so cheap, and also extremely tasty. Of course it helped that I had all Bryanna Clark Grogan's recipes by my side!! [...]
The clay cooker produced an amazing seitan, it was delicious, it retained all its juices, and it had a wonderful crust on the outside that would never have been possible without the clay baker!
I also want to comment on the fact that Amazon has the best price for this clay baker!! Even if you buy it directly from the manufacturer, tne price is not this good!!
I wish I could give it 10 stars!! I also purchased the same clay cooker in a smaller size.
Oh and one more thing, don't forget to soak your clay baker in water for about 10 - 15 minutes befor you cook in it. You also want to make sure you don't use any kind of dish washing detergent when you wash it as it soaks in everything!! Just wash with a stiff brush, or even a firm sponge, and lots of water. One more very important tip - never place a hot clay baker on a cold surface. You might break the claypot!

Romertopf 4-Quart Clay Baker Review

Romertopf 4-Quart Clay Baker
Average Reviews:

Two, large turkey wings fit perfectly in the bottom of the 4-quart Romertopf ("113" stamped on the bottom). In the 3 years that I've had mine, turkey wings are the only thing I've cooked in it although a duck is slated to be cooked in it tonight. As with the wings, this is the right size for anyone wanting to cook a whole duck.
Turkey wings tend to get a bit dry if roasted in a traditional, covered, roasting pan. In a Romertopf, however, the meat is incredibly moist. All I do is season the wings, put them in the bottom of the soaked (in cold water, both top and bottom) Romertopf, stick it in a cold oven, turn the oven temperature to 425 degrees, then forget about it until the oven timer goes off 50 minutes later. Most times the wings are browned as desired. The few times they have not been, I've removed the top and returned the uncovered wings to the oven for an additional 10 minutes.
Although people writing reviews for some other size Romertopfs say they stick it in their dishwasher, mine came with instructions to only wash it by hand and never use soap. For removing grease, the use of baking soda is suggested. I have found the easiest way to clean a Romertopf is to first remove as much as possible with slightly warm water and a nylon brush, then soak it over night. In the morning the baked-on dripping are much easier to remove. After removing them I do a final cleaning with baking soda and warm water.
One thing people should know is that Romertopfs, no matter what size, can not be cleaned so they obtain a new, never used look. Being made of porous clay, the bottom and inner top get stained and spotted (from grease).

A friend told me about clay pots, so I decided to try this one. I normally cook for 2 people. This is a medium sized pot and you could easily cook enough meat for 4+ adults, but if you want to cook the veggies at the same time (highly recommended!), you will need a bigger pot. Last night I roasted a game hen - my first attempt. I adapted a recipe from the Chicken Boulangere in Bridget Jones' "Complete Guide to Claypot Cooking". It was incredibly easy. I soaked the pot while I prepared the veggies. Just put some sliced potatoes, onion, lemon and herbs in the lower half of the pot and season with salt and pepper. Put the game hen in the middle, and then I put some baby carrots and another layer of potato slices around the bird and brushed everything with melted butter. I put the pot in a cold oven, and turned the heat to 450. It was done in less than an hour. As this was my first time, I checked the hen temperature with a meat thermometer - it was a perfect 180F.
One thing to realize is that the pot releases steam. This means that the veggies will not be crisp, unless you take the lid off for the last 10-15mins of cooking to crisp up the top layer. The result was truly delicious, by far the most moist poultry I have eaten for a long time. The potatoes were fabulous too, they absorbed the juice from the meat, giving them a wonderful flavor. Cooking everything in one pot tied all the tastes of the different components together very nicely. My husband loved it too. I will certainly use this pot on a regular basis, and can't wait to try it on chicken, duck, beef and lamb. It is a whole new adventure in the kitchen, which makes it fun! I may even buy the bigger 4 quart model, as it will make entertaining much easier - you can put the whole meal in one pot, put it in the oven and then forget about it until the timer buzzes! From my experience last night, I know I would be serving a tasty meal I could be happy to entertain with.

Perfect for quickly preparing healthy, high-quality meals for two to four people, this versatile 4- to 6-pound 3-quart-capacity clay pot may be used for a wide variety of foods, from soups and stews to desserts and breads. The baker is made of porous clay that is unglazed inside and out, which allows it to "breathe" during the cooking process. Soaking the baker in water before baking allows it to create and maintain moisture that cooks recipes to perfection, while preventing flavors and nutrients from escaping. The pot should be placed inside a cool oven and then the temperature should be set, allowing the oven and baker to heat up gradually. Sudden temperature changes should be avoided. The handsomely embossed terra-cotta baker easily moves from the oven or microwave to the table for use as an attractive serving piece. Made in Mexico, the dishwasher-safe clay baker measures 13-3/4 by 9-1/2 by 6-1/3 inches.
