You can use them for everything from steaming vegetables (they have vented covers), heating soup, warming sauces, or storing and reheating leftovers. The bowls never get the least bit hot, and are so versatile going from fridge to microwave to dishwasher. I was so pleased with the first set, I ordered another and am thinking of expanding my collection.
The purple bowl holds a family size serving of vegetables, and the orange bowl is large enough to hold a whole a can of soup.
