Wonderfully steamed vegetables, no funky tastes, YET! I have yet to be able to remove the steamer without the contents spilling back into the pot, or on the counter. After numerous tries.
When I try to remove the steamer using the two loops, it creates a roll effect that wedges itself into any pot I own, and eventually while tugging, one end slips out, and the contents roll out the other end.
I guess I have to use a stock pot to be able to steam a few sprigs of broccoli. Color me confused...

Trudeau Stainless Steel Vegetable Steamer Review

(More customer reviews)I loved this little steamer when I first picked it up. It folds gracefully into a dish shape that fits variable width pans, it folds back into a disc for compact storage, the little holes in the metal are nicely spaced and the right width to let enough steam out but not let bits of the food being steamed fall into the boiling water. So far so good.
But, it has a plastic handle and little plastic feet that sit in between it and the inside of the pan you boil water in. When I first saw this I thought: "Huh. Plastic in a high-heat cooking tool. Ah well, it's probably some sort of strong, heat resistant plastic." Well yes, up to the temperature of boiling water, sure. But the temperature of the pan the little feet are sitting on is a bit hot for it. The feet (and part of the handle) actually melted into the metal disk and the bottom of the pan when I left the steamer on for a few minutes after taking out my steamed veggies. The smell of burnt plastic was just awful, and took forever to get rid of. And the pan I had sat the steamer in is now ruined- I'm not going to cook with it now that there are bits of plastic congealed on it and it smells like chemicals.
Conclusion: theoretically good design, but shoddy materials.

All-Clad Stainless Steamer Insert Review

(More customer reviews)This insert has been hanging in my kitchen for some years now, and I was recently given another. The new one is made in China despite the exorbitant All-Clad price, though it doesn't seem to make much difference. Both are equally unsatisfactory, except perhaps for draining vegetables, and there are more convenient ways to do that.
First, the steamer fits only one of my many pots --an LTD saucepan. And it doesn't fit it well. The little bead that rests on the pot rim is too shallow to make a good seal even with the pot the insert is made for, and hopeless with any other. Steam whooshes out over the pot rim without going through the veg, and the bad seal cools the steam and sogs the vegetables. The pot lid doesn't fit the insert very well, either, and drips cooling condensate into the vegetables --more sog.
The steaming surface is inches above the water (unless you boil an awful lot of water, when it bubbles up into the veg and sogs them). The steam doesn't circulate well and probably isn't hot enough to start with. An inch or so of water always steams better than 3 or 4 inches --don't ask me why.
The steaming surface is inadequate. All the holes are on the bottom, and kind of in the middle of that, and what steam reaches the top, or business half, of the steamer doesn't circulate well. More sog.
What with one thing and another, no quantity and no type of food cooks very well. Well, it's not too bad for Persian-style rice --the kind you pre-cook slightly, then finish by steaming.
Alternatives? Any folding steamer will do a better job. You can find a nice big one that will fit into your 13" LTD frying pan, if you're lucky. Take a pair of pliers and pull the lifter stem out of the middle (it's not much use anyway). You can get a lot of clams into this rig. Or use a smaller folding steamer in any pan --LTD pans with their tight lids are my favorite. The sauciers have domed lids which work even better.
If you have a steam canner, put a bamboo steamer and its bamboo lid on the plate (the big ones just fit). This makes the best steamed food ever, but it's a bit cumbersome for everyday.

Tried 11 Oster's and 8 Black & Decker steamers over the past 2.5 years. Oster's electronics went out. B&D's plastic cracked in dishwasher and fell apart. We steam 2x per day fully loaded.
The Taylor made Biggest Loser Steamer so far exceeds both the others. It's still new - only 3 weeks of use - but it's design is obviously well thought through. Easy to read numbers on the timer, back-lit water level indicator, power on light easy to see across the kitchen. Nice colors and lip handles on water part means you don't have to wait for it to cool down to take apart. Plastic is thicker so we hope it won't crack in the dishwasher.
UPDATE: Less than 2 months of use, like a hot marbel dropped in cold water, the CLEAR plastic parts are shattering. Only the CLEAR plastic, NOT the GREEN plastic. Both are washed together in the dishwasher. AND the knob now turns only clockwise. It's jammed if we try to turn it counter-clockwise. Just ordered another black & decker which holds up the best.
I don't know how to reduce the # of stars, but now I give it a 1 star.
Looks like we're the biggest loser.

I hate that we waited a full month before using it a second time because now we can't return it. The thing simply stopped heating and the indicator lights would not work. Please do not buy this thing. Very poor quality, if I had it to do over again I would purchase the RIVAL.

(More customer reviews)This steamer insert is too large to use in smaller pots, so be sure to measure and make sure your pot is at least 7" wide on the inside. The feet won't scratch your pot, and removing the cooked vegetables is much easier without the center post common to cheaper steamers. With this one, I can just use a large spoon to scoop out the items, or if I want I can hoist the entire steamer out of the pan by grabbing the rings on the sides, but that's pretty tricky when it's fully of steaming veggies.

(More customer reviews)When some friends gave this little steamer to my husband & me almost 10 years ago, we thought it was a dumb idea! "What do you need a whole separate appliance like this for?" we laughed. After all, we assured each other, we had a complete set of pots & pans, running water, etc. We thought this was just a silly affectation. We were wrong. We finally decided to use the steamer when our friends were coming to dinner, cooked some broccoli in it and....had our revelation. That night the broccoli was crisp, bright green & "al dente" after 12 minutes of steaming. In other words, "perfect." So was the asparagus we steamed the next night, the rice we steamed the night after that, and so on.
1001 nights later, having used this handy little appliance almost each & every night, we finally had to admit that we'd been wrong, completely wrong, totally wrong! This is no affectation! Not only did our vegetables, rice, couscous, etc. come out perfectly every time, steaming preserved their nutrients & this little steamer was incredibly easy & convenient to use. I've even used it to sterilize my younger child's bottles & to steam foreign stamps off envelopes for my son's collection. The only small appliance we all use more frequently is our electric kettle! This steamer's compact size, however, makes it easy to store & all of its plastic bowls/covers/baskets fit easily in the diswasher for easy after-dinner clean-up. After nearly 10 years it still works as well as it did that first night!
You need this steamer. You may not realize it till after you've owned it for a bit, but if you don't find yourself discovering multiple uses for it, well, your imagination is lacking!

(More customer reviews)I purchased this steamer as a Christmas gift for my wife in 2006. Within a few weeks it started to leak and then the digital clock failed. We returned it to the company for replacement. They sent a new one, and the clock on that one also failed, so we retuned it in Oct. of '07. They finally sent us another new one in Feb. of '08. Within a few days, the digital clock on this unit failed. I can accept that one unit can have a defect, and it's not out of the question that a second one could, by coincidence, also have the same defect, but three units with the exact same defect??? I don't think so. This is a good looking product that is inferior in quality. Stay away from it!

The Cook-Zen Microwave Pot Review

(More customer reviews)When considering this purchase, I was a bit put off by the price -- it seemed too expensive. I was having my kitchen remodeled and would not be able to cook in it for a while. I was trying to find ways in which I could still cook and eat healthy. When I saw this item, it appeared to be a product in which I could put all the ingredients into it, pop it into the microwave, and presto -- a complete, healthy, Japanese meal!
So it seemed that this would be perfect for me, so I bit the bullet
and purchase both the Zen Cooker and the recipe book.
The recipes (if you purchase the related book) are good, but unfortunately to
cook a complete meal (rice, vegetables, main dish) you have to cook all
separately and thus have the problem of keeping them all warm, etc.
The Zen cooker works well, the cookbook recipes are good, but for the
money I put out and what I expected to get out of it -- I was disappointed.

(More customer reviews)As far as expandable steamers go, this one is the best, as far as I'm concerned. The 3 folding legs are rounded, so you can use this steamer in a non-stick coated pot, without worrying about scratching it. The center post handle screws off, if it gets in the way when steaming certain foods, like fish. I also like how you can put a fork through the top portion of the handle (as the instructions suggest), in order to lift it out of a pot, without burning any fingers in the process. Although it's a little bit more work cleaning it, as opposed to a silicone steamer (that doesn't expand), I usually use it for vegetables, and use a silicone steamer for fish (easier to clean). If you're really into steaming your foods, get this one and a silicone.

(More customer reviews)This is a really nice pan. I have used it many times. It is good quality and the right size for my family. The steamer basket works great and so does the lock and drain system. The only thing that I don't like is the lid design. If you aren't using the drain piece the lid sits down in a groove and is not tight fitting so when the food gets hot and boils the lid jiggles and makes noise and spews water drops all over the stove top or floor. I have had to resort to using a lid from another pan that fits better, go figure!

Since going on the South Beach Diet, I've upped my intake of eggs, fish, chicken, and vegetables tremendously. And because I live an extremely active lifestyle, I never have time to wait for things to thaw before cooking. I was defrosting frozen meat and nuking scrambled eggs and frozen vegetables in the microwave everyday when I did some reading and found out that microwaving destroys over 90% of the healthy vitamins and nutrients in foods. Researchers have found that steaming is the best way to preserve nutrients if you have to cook a food.
This steamer gets the job done better than I'd ever hoped. While it does take a little longer to cook with steam than in the microwave or on the stovetop (add 5-15 minutes of cook time), it is a more hassle-free way to prepare food. You don't have to constantly check your food to see if its burning or stir it. No more exploding eggs in the microwave or rice stuck to the bottom of the pan. Just load it up, set the timer, and leave it to cook. For example, I stuck a couple of frozen chicken breasts and a cup of brown rice in, set for 45 minutes, and left to do something else. Halfway through I poured in frozen vegetables and seasoned the chicken and rice. The chicken cooked through perfectly, the vegetables were tender, and the rice was perfect. Hard boiled eggs are easy too.
Clean up afterwards was a breeze. The plastic containers are easy to wash off, but the drip pan fills up quickly and when full is hard to get to the sink to pour out without spilling. Cooking directions and times are approximate, so there is some trial and error involved. But since I love it so far, I will definitely be using it several times a week and get lots of practice. I highly recommend.

I made a mess out of cooking rice (all the negative reviews are true) until I figured that I should use slightly less water than the recommended quantity. After that, I spent 1 year using it nonstop (we eat rice every day).
365 days later, the non-stick bowl is BADLY chipped, like little bubbles that burst on the bottom and left pinhead-sized chips. I swear that I never used anything else than the included plastic scoop (and sponge for cleaning) and never ever scratched it, so I'm 100% sure the non-stick coating quality is to blame.
Add to that that non-stick coating is toxic*, this baby is out of my kitchen as soon as I can afford a Zojirushi. They're not as elegants, but they last forever.For more info on teflon toxicity, visit http://www.ewg.org

Stainless Steel Rice Cooker Model ME81 (Formerly ME8) - by Miracle Exclusives Review

(More customer reviews)After an exhaustive search for a rice cooker without a non-stick coating I was pretty much left with the ME81 from Miracle. On this basis alone, I would have given it 5 stars. It's very basic; when you plug it in, it goes to a warming mode (the directions state brown rice should be warmed for 15 minutes prior to cooking). When ready to cook, you simply depress the cook button. It then heats the contents to boiling and when ready, automatically switches back to the warming mode. The rice can continue warming for a couple of hours. Whenever ready to stop, simply unplug the unit and fluff the rice.
I must admit I have no experience with rice-cookers so my experience with the Miracle could be affected by my own ineptitude. To date, as far as grains are concerned, I've only made brown rice. My first attempt was 2 cups (the little plastic cup size which comes with the machine is smaller than one cup) and it worked fairly well with only a little rim of sludge around the edge of the glass top that occurred when it was pushed up during the boiling phase. The rice also stuck slightly to the bottom of the pan and was more moist in some areas than others, but I might have put in too much water. The directions call for extra water when cooking brown rice so with experimentation, I hope to improve on this. Next, I tried making 3 cups of brown rice and had quite a bit of boil over, with sludge running down the face of the cooker. I wonder what kind of mess results if you try to make all 8 cups? Obviously, I need more experience.
That aside, I have to say my efforts resulted in the best rice I've ever tasted! I feel like I can now get into all those healthy grains like millet, quinoa - and of course, brown rice - and switch from wheat-based products. I also steamed some vegetables in the steaming basket. They cooked in less time than I anticipated and even though I overcooked them (they never changed their bright colors so I thought they weren't done), they tasted fantastic. I've always felt uneasy about cooking vegetables in the microwave and now I'm finally liberated! The taste improvement alone is worth the investment in this cooker!
When initially searching for a rice cooker, I was disappointed all the fancy, multi-function rice cookers didn't come with stainless steel pots. Fuzzy-logic sounds so cool. But, according to a NY Times article (Sept 30 '08, "The Steamy Way to Dinner") one button varieties actually may have more flexibility. "It's easy to override the machine's small brain. Press the "cook" button, melt butter in the bowl, and sweat a finely diced shallot in it until soft - then add rice, broth and saffron strands, and start the machine again to make a daffodil-yellow pilaf". (Although, I think the directions enclosed with the ME81 stated you shouldn't repress the cook button, probably for risk of burning the contents of the pot.) According to the NY Times, "The most intriguing recipes are those that have been developed, out of necessity or curiosity, entirely for the rice cooker, like the ones here" and then introduces food blogger Hui Leng Tay teczcape.blogspot There are also some recipe links. Just looking at the pictures makes me want to start experimenting.
Anyway, despite the slight messiness, I love this rice cooker, love the tastes it is producing, and look forward to many more healthful meals in the future.

Automatic Rice Cooker - All Stainless Steel! (More customer reviews)I bought this set to replace another pot of similar size. I figured that this would be a great deal - it's got inserts and it's from Calphalon at a great price too. The tempered glass cover fits well and is helpful because you can see inside without removing the cover although it spits when the pot is at a full and rapid boil. It's a stainless steel piece so it's not dark when you look inside like many other Calphalon pieces. The aluminum bottom is not the same as on their commercial or professional lines. It's a heavy-duty aluminum bottom attached to a stainless steel pot. Even though the pot along with the bottom is thicker and heavier than most other lines that do the same, it did not heat up like other Calphalon pieces that I own. Still, I cooked a stew at a slow simmer for six hours and it didn't burn at the bottom. A good thing.
This is the first time that I have inserts like these and I don't think much of the big insert. To cook pasta or food, you need to add an additional 2 quarts of water (the amount needed to touch the bottom of the insert) making it more time consuming to use. I will cook my pasta without the insert and may use the insert as a colander/drainer. The small insert is useful because you can steam items while boiling pasta or other items
All in all, a good pot not a great one at a great price.

(More customer reviews)My daughter asked for a large sauce pot to make my mother-in-laws spaghetti sauce. I have an old Farberware 8 qt dutch oven/stockpot. I wanted to find something similar. This Oneida Multi Pot is large enough to hold the spaghetti sauce recipe (stainless) so no funky tastes, and functions for pasta and as a steamer. Well made and I get 3 pots for the price of one with the same high quality.
