Braun WK200W Aqua Express Electric Water Kettle, White Review

Braun WK200W Aqua Express Electric Water Kettle, White
Average Reviews:

Not only does this improve upon the standard stove-based kettle, but it improves upon the previous generation of fixed-cord electric kettles.
The separation of kettle and corded base allows the former to be taken to the sink (or refrigerator if you're boiling pitcher-filtered water) without bother. It makes pouring at the table or in another room easy, as well. The cord can be wound inside the base so that only the needed length is exposed - neatening your countertop. The base has a "360-degree rotational connection," which means that you don't have to align the kettle in any particular way when replacing it. No buttons to press, no connector to snap.
The handle and kettle shell stay cool, obviating the need for a hot pad when picking it up, and the single control is as simple as can be: press it to start and it turns itself off when the water boils. If you forget about it, you needn't worry about boiling away all the water and leaving yourself with a burnt pot. (It will also turn off automatically if the pot is empty, the lid is opened, or the pot is removed from the base!)
The anti-calcification filter reduces scaling and thus the need to run a vinegar solution to clean out the buildup (something most people never do with their stove-based kettles). The design allows you to easily see the entire inside of the kettle, so you can keep an eye on things.
For those who regular drink tea or other beverages made with stove-boiled water, an electric kettle is a real convenience. This Braun kettle is about as convenient as they come.

Hot water anywhere, anytime! This electric kettle has a 4-way safety auto-off: when water has boiled, when lid is released, when lifted off the base or when there is no water remaining, the kettle shuts off. The large spout lets you fill the kettle easily and a push button releases the lid.

I was a little surprised at the price but found that it is worth it. It is built very sturdy and does what it was made to. The stainless steel looks great and is very sleek. One thing though... GETS VERY HOT, but as long as you use the handle you will be fine. I really like that it came with a filter in it and has the automatic turn off when it reaches the appropriate temperature. If you're willing to pay $69+ for a water heater you will not be disappointed.

Rival Hot Pot Express Review

Perhaps you had a faulty item, bulmabriefs144? I had the fortune of having a friend with this particular teapot during my first semester at school, and am now quite happy to have one of my own. I have found that it does indeed heat the maximum volume of water at a higher speed than a microwave, and is ideal for making things like pot noodles and cup soups.
I've never tried it with leftovers, but if you wish to boil water, this inexpensive teapot is more than worth the scant few dollars you pay for it. The design could be more attractive, but over all this is a functional product.

Zojirushi CK-BAC10 1300-Watt Electric 34-Ounce Kettle Review

Zojirushi CK-BAC10 1300-Watt Electric 34-Ounce Kettle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Designed by Toshiyuki Kita, this Zojirushi electric water kettle is as perfect as we could find on the marketplace as of early 2010. The competitions don't come close in design and in features and so it was an easy but very time-consuming choice for us. I did benefit a lot from reading the reviews on Amazon and so even though eventually we found a better deal elsewhere I decided to post this review here.
----Pros----
The water boiling compartment is essentially all stainless steel. It was the number one criteria for us. We live in a hard water place and our apartment building does not have a water softener, so we need to boil vinegar in it to remove any deposit. Stainless steel means the taste easily rinses off. This cannot be said for our previous plastic kettle in which the vinegar taste stays on a lot longer.
The heating element is concealed and the bottom surface is flat except at the rim. This makes cleaning a snap. Contrast this to exposed heating element in the form of a coil where we couldn't even reach the bottom easily in the past. We also find that the deposit tends to sit at the bottom to form larger pieces of "flakes". There is still some powder in the water to be sure, but flakes are easier to deal with (for one they don't get poured out so easily).
The opening is wide---four and a half inch in diameter to be precise. Cleaning is easy since the whole hand can go in. Filling is also easier.
The lid "locks" securely when filling. After you lift the lid pass a certain degree, you feel it passes a snap and the lid stays open even if you tilt the kettle. Contrast this to some designs that use a simple free-falling hinge.
The flat bottom actually means the "minimum water level" is very low. Contrast this with a certain "doom at the bottom of a glass kettle" design.
Cordless is great. I don't know how wide the patent is but every single cordless kettle I have seen uses the Strix patented connector.
Circle-shaped... this design combines naturally with a cordless design, but it is not universal. We almost bought a rectangular (square) kettle with a square base.
The on/off switch will turn off automatically when you lift the kettle from its base. So the next time when you put it down the kettle won't continue to boil. (We want to prematurely stops boiling primarily when brewing green tea. It's not a big deal but it's a pros for us.)
Starting from room temperature and after boiling one pot of water, the plastic on the outside is only warm to touch. This is because the plastic outside is only a housing and no water touches it directly. In our previous plastic boiler, the outside can get hot enough to feel a burning sensation.
----Cons----
It's still has plastic in the water "channel" in the lid part of the kettle. The sprout is also plastic, and the seal between the lid and the bottom compartment is silicon. So if you really need to avoid plastic at all cost, this is not it.
Stainless steel is not transparent and you cannot see how much water is left from the outside. Frankly this is the only thing we miss but we decide metal is more important than transparency.
The "open/close" switch on the lid does not mean total seal. I hope we didn't get a lemon but when our kettle is held at 90 degrees or more, the water will drip out even in the closed position. Well, technically water _must_ be able to come out anyway since there is a steam vent, which is also is also how this boiler stops: it checks the amount of vapors passing through.
I feel that the steam vent is too close to the handle. In more than one occasion I have felt the steam when I tried to grab the handle. It also means that in practice you want to close the open/close switch to make sure all steam goes into the vent but not the sprout, or else your water will boil longer than designed. No big deal but some energy can be wasted otherwise.
Being stainless steel in the inside, it weights more than my girlfriend prefer. But it's already way lighter than the glass and the die-cast kettles we've tried at the shops.
The water volume is just a bit more than 4 cups (precisely it is 1 liter). I often wish it is larger but then it will get heavier. At the current size it's a decent tradeoff, but how about coming out with a 1.5L model?
Due to the lid design you have to tilt the kettle almost 90 degrees before water comes out, even when the kettle is at its maximum capacity. It's great for safety but it may not work well for those with arthritis. On this note I also mention that the handle is hard plastic so it may not be the easiest to grip for aging hands.
The sprout is surprisingly small and so water comes out rather slowly. My girlfriend remarks it has a "zen" feel to see water coming out slowly and steadily. I use it to train my patience in the morning. :P
Another speed related issue is the wattage. It's rated at 1300 watt "only" and we used a 1500 watt before this. It was a bit slower but we got used to it quickly. We do note that the power cable is a lot cooler in this one. In our previous kettle we almost thought the plastic would melt one day... (and the tip is, again, close the sprout switch to make sure all steam goes through the vent.)
The lid can be awkward to operate. It took us some time to get used to and some more to train ourselves to open it with just one hand. It's a small "tab" that you push on one side to lift the other side, and then you grip the lifted side to lift up the entire lid. I am sure it's a great safety feature... all our tea friends took more than a few seconds to figure out how to open it. :P
One year warranty is a bit short. But in the three months we have had it I cannot imagine anything that can go wrong.
Finally, yes, it's made in China. But I am just jotting it down for completeness. It's not a cons to us by itself.

Zojirushi CD-LCC30 Micom 3.0-Liter Electric Dispensing Pot Review

Zojirushi CD-LCC30 Micom 3.0-Liter Electric Dispensing Pot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just received this for Christmas, it's something I've wanted for a while. Ever since my tea kettle died of old age, I've been boiling water for tea with a regular sauce pan and what usually happens is I forget all about it and only remember after it has been boiling for a while. Also, I didn't like the long wait for hot water. I want instant gratification! And now I have it with this Zojirushi dispensing pot. It's perfect since I'm an avid tea drinker, consuming several pots of tea each day.
A long long time ago, I used to have the "air pot" style dispensing pot where you just press on the top and it pumps out water. This one is a much newer design and dispensing is handled electronically. What I like is the "safety" feature which was lacking in the old "air pot" styles. You have to press the "unlock" button before the "dispensing" button which prevents accidentally dispensing hot water. You can set this to keep water at 205°F, 195°F, or 175°F. You can also set it to give you hot water in 7 hours, but this is a feature I really don't need to use. I'm using the 195°F which seems to be a good middle ground for making black (requires hotter water) and green (requires lower temp water) teas. This is also handy for making instant noodles, oatmeal, hot chocolate. Also handy when needing hot water for a dish I'm cooking, or making chicken/beef broth for a dish I'm cooking. This is very convenient ... no more waiting for hot water! (This beats getting a replacement tea kettle because with a tea kettle I still have to wait for it to boil/whistle, and it usually whistles shortly after I've sat down and gotten comfortable.) This pot will automatically reboil when it feels the temp has dropped too much. The water level gauge is easy to read, the lid lifts up easily for refilling (also removes easily to make pouring water out and cleaning a cinch). Another nice little detail is a removable power cord. It makes me feel a bit "safer" being able to remove this before cleaning out the pot in the sink.
I am confident that this will last me a long time. My in-laws also have a Zojirushi water dispensing pot and it has never failed on them. And I know people who have other Zojirushi products and have had no problems with them. So I feel comfortable with this brand, and I may look into getting one of their rice cookers.
Oh, I have to mention one more nicety of this dispensing pot. The base will swivel around (think lazy suzan style), making it easy to rotate it without scratching your kitchen counter top.
The only thing I need to be careful about is where to put the dispensing pot since there is a steam vent on the top. I don't put it directly beneath any kitchen cabinets, just in case the steam might damage the cabinet over time.
ADDED 11/19/05:
I just wanted to mention that I have had this for 2 years and it is still working as well as it did when I first got it. I have used this pot everyday for the past 2 years. I refill it at least once a day in the summer, 2-4 times a day in the winter. I use it mainly for making tea (big tea drinkers in this house) and cooking. It's easy to clean. No staining on the inside; of course this would depend on your local water quality. Not bad at all considering the use I get out of this. I still highly recommend this pot.
I have a baby now. I have found this dispensing pot handy for quickly warming up bottles from the fridge... instant hot water to immerse bottle in. My screaming baby doesn't have to wait long for her milk. Perfect! The pot has also been useful when mixing cereal... mix cereal with some cold water, then a splash of the hot water to bring it up to a nice warm temp for her.

Zojirushi CD-FAC22 Zutto Micom Electric Dispensing Pot Review

Zojirushi CD-FAC22 Zutto Micom Electric Dispensing Pot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've used this pot for some months now on a near daily basis and had absolutely no problems. It is a must for the tea enthusiast. Not only is it more stylish than most dispensing pots, it is in a league of it's own for selecting temperature and sustaining temperature over time. It is quick to boil, and can silently keep your water ready for tea for all-day use.
The cost of this pot is higher than your average boiling pot, but it shows in the extra features and in the build quality. The pump action is a much-loved feature, as is the break-away safety cord (all appliances should have such a cord in my opinion). You can just tell that the people that designed this knew what they were doing and cared.
On the downside, I wish for 3 things: 1) the ability to set the temp to more degrees (such as between 160 and 180 for green tea instead of 140); 2) an on-off switch instead of always just disconnecting the cord; and 3) a slightly deeper indent behind the spout so that more tea pots can easily fit under the spout.
If you are serious about tea, buy this unit.

The "Zutto" Collection is Zojirushi's first collection of products that is designed and developed as a series of products. The concept of the Zutto Collection was born as a result of the collaboration between Zojirushi and an interior designer in Japan.Unlike other Zojirushi products, the physical body of the Zutto was designed first, then the inner technology.Zutto (Soot-tow), meaning "always" inJapanese, is designed to be enjoyed and used universally, for any occasion, anytime. This new Zutto Micom Electric Dispensing Pot has one-touch electric dispensing system and a micro computerized temperature control system. It will display actual water temperature at all times and has a Dechlorinate (by extended boiling) and decaling mode. Also new to this item is a water level gauge which includes a red air filled ball (water level ball) making it easier to check the water level and an option to turn off the beep indicator that alerts completion of boiling process and low water level.

Zojirushi CD-WBC40 Micom 4-Liter Electric Water Boiler and Warmer, Champagne Gold Review

Zojirushi CD-WBC40 Micom 4-Liter Electric Water Boiler and Warmer, Champagne Gold
Average Reviews:

Who spends money on fancy water heaters? People who like to have fine control over the brewing of their tea. Also, probably some folks who like to have unusual gadgets so they can rub it in the faces of those who are less awesome, but for the sake of this review let's pretend you're not one of those people.
This particular Zojirushi holds enough water for 2-3 people to drink throughout the day. It boils the water first -- this takes about 15-20 minutes -- and then allows it to cool to one of four "keep warm" temperatures. The "keep warm" presets of 208, 195, 175, and 140 are perfect for most kinds of tea, cup o' noodles, baby bottles, and various kinds of water torture on intrusive guests.
The magnetic break-away cord is a fantastic feature that demonstrates Zojirushi's attention to detail. When your mother decides to rearrange your kitchen without warning, you can rest assured that the Zojirushi will be safe from electrical mishaps. Don't ask how I know this.
Other safety features include an automatic shut-down when it runs out of water, a dispenser that will not dispense until you "unlock" it by pressing a button, and a "steam-save" design that limits the amount of steam being vomited into your kitchen. This last feature is especially nice for those of us with wall cabinets extending over the counter. I like to steam my food on the stove, not while it's in storage, thanks.
This device is so simple to use that even my husband can do it. That said, due to the charming Engrish in the instruction book, at first I was under the impression that the timer existed to shut down the machine. I realized later that either my math skills were terrible, or in reality the timer was designed to start it up. Ignore the fact that I ended that sentence with a preposition. The point still stands. The good news is that having a timed start-up is more useful to me than a timed shut-down, so for once I was glad to discover further evidence that I am an idiot.
I had one concern prior to purchase. Would teapots fit under the dispenser? I am pleased to report that they can, despite the best efforts of the Zojirushi photographers to make it look like the spout is designed to work with cups alone. If you have an epic teapot that serves 300, you might have a problem getting it up under there. But a normal pot? Rock on.
This little device is now my favorite appliance next to the washing machine. Because as much as I love tea, I like clean underwear better.
--
Note: Confused about which Zojirushi water heater to purchase? Check the comparison chart! Amazon links to this chart in the product description, but the average person manages to miss it. It's like a ninja, but with fewer pointy edges.
--
Edit: It's now been over a year since I got my Zojirushi, and I am pleased to report that it still works like it's new. I have cleaned it twice with Zojirushi's cleaner -- sold in packets here on Amazon -- despite it never really looking like it needed cleaning at all. I did it simply because the company recommended it. I'm a follower like that. The Zojirushi has survived a move, three extreme power surges, and a switch to mineral-heavy tap water. I'm starting to wish Zojirushi had made my own body. I mean, think of the time I could save if I only had to be cleaned up twice a year! And I didn't survive the move in nearly as good a condition. Tsk. At least I'm not old enough for power surges yet.

My old Zojirushi water boiler conked out after 8 years of regular use, so I ordered the CD-WBC30. Features have gotten better in 8 years: the LCD display shows the temperature, and I have 4 thermostat settings instead of two. I used to have to choose between 208 degrees (too hot) and 140 degrees (too cold). I can now also select 195 degrees and 175 degrees. The 175 degree setting is just fine for instant coffee and oatmeal. I've used this boiler for two months without problems.

West Bend 53783 1-3/4-Quart Cordless Water Kettle, Black Review

West Bend 53783 1-3/4-Quart Cordless Water Kettle, Black
Average Reviews:

If your an expat or just an anglophile and you are left wondering, "Why doesn't America embrace the electric kettle?!" then this is the item for you. Sleek and aptly priced.
I don't know why you'd pay around $50 for something that just heats water... brand loyalty? I wouldn't pay the extra $15-$30 just for the flat metal plate that the Braun or Philips has. (The West Bend kettle has a metal coil to heat up the water: Yes, you have to clean the coiled versions, but it's exactly the same as cleaning out a coffee maker... white vinegar once in a blue moon. Hey, the Brits and the Irish don't mind the coil, why should I?)
The stouter version of this I think is too small, unless you live alone and don't drink that much tea/coffee/cocoa. Between us, my brother and I drink six to eight cups of tea a day, plus hot cereal on top of that and this kettle is more than sufficient (1.7 liters).
Some more good things:
It turns of automatically after it comes to a roaring boil.
See-through panel lets you see the water level.
So quiet, you wouldn't know it's on...
That's why it has a little red light that goes on.
Has a locking top so as to avoid spills.
The black fits in with my kitchen's decor.
It also comes in handy for when I'm cooking, using up all the burners and need just a bit of hot water, quickly. Or even if I am cooking rice or pasta, it's easier to heat up the water in the electric kettle and then pour it into the pot on the stove.
Two complaints: The cord is thick and not very flexible (the cord itself is about two feet). I have this plugged into the same outlet as my microwave and cannot use the two at the same time or else I'll have a circuit short... but then again, whoever remodeled the kitchen did a bad job on the electicity.
Makes a great present for any hot beverage lover or college student.

This Electric Kettle is quite simple without any frills. For the price, it does what it claims to do. It boils water quickly , the water level is easy to see and has the auto-shut off feature. I have used it reliably to boil water for tea, oatmeal etc. The water is quite hot, so use caution when pouring it out. The lid , can sometimes be hard to close & open.

I am a recently disabled adult that cannot get enough of a good cup of tea. So seeing this I thought it would make a nice birthday present for me, and make life a little easier around the kitchen. It performs as it says it will.
It looks bulky but is surprisingly lightweight and easy to handle. The whole unit spins on a lazy-susan device making it east to direct the steam vent away from kitchen surfaces.
You will need a water pitcher of some kind to fill this easily. I have a medium sized one sand simply filly the pitcher twice to fill this device once. The handle on top, removable lid, and notched corner makes emptying and cleaning a breeze.
The temperature features are splendid and accurate, there are three:
205 for noodles/ramen etc, herbal infusions, pu-er, Assam and some other black teas..
195 For Darjeeling or delicate blacks like Illam valley are at this temperature as well, let the water sit a few minutes in the brew pot befor adding tea leaves, if you have a very delicate tea.
175 for green or white teas. A few of the more delicate whites fill the tea pot first, then add the leaves. By filling your teapot dry first, this allows the water to lose 5-10F by just warming the pot. Often enough to make a better flavored tea.
On a given day I can go from pu-er tsocha right from boiling, and set the temp to 195. Make a pot of bold assam in the afternoon when at a full boil, then set the temp to 175. Now, after dinner it is set for making jasmine tea for dessert. All with a minimal energy usage and cost.
I have found it a good idea to refill it only 1-2 times then empty the remains, give it a brush inside with a towel, and then let it completely dry. My scale buildup was reduced quite a bit this way.
For a fully able person this unit -is- a bit of a luxury. A simple electric teapot with temperature control would do you just fine for a fraction of the initial cost. This will make cost up over time by the thermos nature though, just a fyi.
Have a chain tea drinker in your life though or thoughts for limited commercial use (like a small teahouse), or like tea but have a very full life and time schedule? This would make a great gift for you or even a small splurge to treat yourself.UPDATE:
Almost two years later and it not only looks fine but functions just as well as the day I got it. I have to descale it about every 9 months or so. Other than that it is pretty maintenance free. Talk about longer term bang for your buck. If you drink tea or would use boiling water on a daily basis, this is a staple for your kitchen.
Some other uses I found. When making soup, rice, thinning a sauce, or deglazing a pan fill your measuring device from the Zojirushi set in slow pour. I now use water from the boiler and the hot water not only speeds up the process, but some flavors are left alone because the room temp water would have cooled the dish and altered the flavors.
I have also found the steel finish wipes very easily. A friend who bought the white version has some staining that stubbornly persists to this day. All in all if you get one you will not be disappointed.
(small edits made above with input from trial and error over the period I've owned this boiler.)

Aroma AWK-160SB Pasta Plus Water Kettle and Noodle Cooker Review

I use this as a water kettle only currently, and I really like it so far. I've looked for a long time for an electric kettle that allows the water not to contact any plastic, and this kettle has this exact feature -- the interior is completely metal although the lid is plastic, but you don't have to use the lid if you don't want to. I also like the way the heating element is completely sealed and that the kettle detaches from the base (the cordless feature). This kettle's construction appear to be very good quality, and it has a 1-year warranty. Its water kettle function works great -- it boils 1 liter of cold water in about 5 minutes. It being a noodle cooker/ soup warmer is a cool feature that I might use one day. This item also comes with a collander and a cute little metal pasta fork to aid you with cooking noodles. I'm very glad I found this kettle.

Rival 4071-WN 32-Ounce Hot Pot Express Review

I bought one of these close to ten years ago and it's still going strong, though I've taken it on three cross-country trips, countless weekend getaways and even to Guatemala.
Why? First, I don't like using hotel/motel coffee units -- who knows how clean their innards are? This holds more liquid, is easy to clean, and I know where it's been!
Second, it's useful for more than just heating water. I once took my daughter to a nice Disneyland hotel for four days, and did all our cooking in this little pot because food was so pricey. I heated soup, ramen, veggies, all kinds of things... and we actually ate well (though simply) the whole time.
Other reviewers have noted that it doesn't have auto shut-off. That's a good point, and it's a bit of a pain, particularly when you're as forgetful as I am. But the water always boils loudly enough that I hear it. Could be a problem in everyday use if you are wandering from room to room; fine for a motel.
The flip side is being able to adjust the heat level, which I don't think you could do if the unit shut off automatically. I've found that VERY handy for things that need a gentle heat, and use that feature a lot.
Power cord is frustratingly short, but necessarily so for safety reasons.
Naturally, anything that holds 32 oz. of water is a little bulky, but when I put it in my suitcase I just jam socks and breakables into it, so it ends up taking less room than you'd think. You can snap the top off, which is also a help when packing it. It's fairly lightweight.
The reason I'm back at this page is that my daughter just went to college and took the pot with her. I need a replacement for my travels without her! I was amazed to find the same pot is still being sold after all these years. That's probably a good sign about its quality in an era when things get redesigned every year.
At this price, if it lasted a year or two of steady use, I think I'd still be happy.
