Flame Tamer SIMMER Ring Aluminum HEAT Diffuser DISTRIBUTER gas stove top stovetop with Wood Handle Review

Flame Tamer SIMMER Ring Aluminum HEAT Diffuser DISTRIBUTER gas stove top stovetop with Wood Handle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Look at my discussion of the Norpro which I also own. 1) of COURSE the handle burns!!!! would you rather have a wooden smell for a bit, or burnt plastic for longer? and metal would make you get welders gloves -- the IDEA is to put it under your pot and LEAVE it there -- so really, there's little use for the handle. These products with the holes in them will keep water, even in the space age layered metals of today's pots, at a 'steep', below a simmer --- at a 'steep' -- which is wonderful. Yes they will rust - and if you go camping yes you will need to put it in a plastic bag -- EVERY pan has a 'hot spot' -- weather it's your great grandmothers Lodge or Cascade or Fireside or what ever Castiron, or if it's a $400 Kuhn-Rikhon pressure cooker -- this will make that 'hot spot' go away -- it will allow you to cook tomato sauce ALL DAY without having to stand there to stir it every so often, so you can go out to the garden, visit your neighbors, go shopping - and come home and take your WOODEN spoon and stir the pot.
I've tried many ways over the past 50 years to keep the handle on, and none has worked -- so don't fight it -- I have a pair of vice grips set for this, and the vice grips cost about $2 as a counter special at an auto parts store and should cost you maybe $5 at a hard ware store -- you only need he small one -- and that's to do the final little fraction of an inch push this way or that.
I didn't believe it, but these ARE hard to find -- when I was looking for some for my girlfriend last Valentines day -- I was saved by the bell because the local cooking supply/hardware store called in the order with half an hour to spare so they would arrive on time.
So-- the spray they use to make them all shiney will burn off -- and smell -- so do it before you cook -- both sides and get it hot -- the wooden handle will sooner or later burn off -- get used to it. It will turn black and rust -- but it's not IN your food, so it's like ditry dishes in your sink -- they don't change the color of your shirts in the laundry. and vice grips of pliers will help you make the final fractional inch adjustment that's not necessary except in your mind!
But when you think of all the vitamins, amino acids, poly-and phyto saccharides from your plants that are destroyed by boiling -- you can cook AND slowly leach out the chemicals into the water -- This and the other one with the holes on top are amazing --
Someone complained because these did their job - the paraphrase was "I put some water on to boil and it took 20 minutes rather than the regular X minutes -- it's so cheap, I'm just going to throw it in the back of my cupboard and forget about it.
so -- if you can stand the smell of metal preservative, and a wooden handle smoking (and eventually falling off) -- these are the most energy efficient items around your kitchen -- they put the hot stuff exactly where it belongs on the bottom of the pan, and don't soak up a lot of heat themselves, they allow it to pass through and do it's job.
So -- I'd suggest this over ANY other -- there was one that was star shaped and was really nothing more than a pot raiser -- put one open grate on top of another -- but the problem remains -- that 'hot spot' that every pan seems to have -- and you have taken for granted for so long you forget that it's there.
You can even use cheap one layer thick aluminum-- you an use a coffee can -- and cook in it without boiling the water over -- and if you do? turn up the flame, burn it clean -- let it cool, stack it with the others on the back burner so you can get to it -- and you are done cleaning -- LOOK MA! NO WATER!
I've used the cast iron ones -- and they are worth not much -- FIRST you heat the cast iron, THEN you heat the pot, and if too hot, you turn down the flame, but the cast iron is still hot and it keeps getting hotter until a bit AFTER you have turned it down -- it's like talking to Mars -- you can do it, but what you do NOW no one will know for 20 minutes.
With these - what you do now, happens now -- so you really CAN 'steep' with no problem and not worry about 'simmer' at all!
so -- these kinds will always be at home in my kitchen -- just like they were in grandmas and my great grandmothers -- my mothers, and mine -- burned beans? only when I gave most of mine away-- burned tomato sauce -- only when I gave them away -- otherwise -- set and forget as they say on late night TV - I sure would like to see this in stainless steel!

Zojirushi EP-EVC25 Electric Gourmet d' Expert Electric Skillet Review

Zojirushi EP-EVC25 Electric Gourmet d' Expert Electric Skillet
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is my third Electric Skillet. I work 100 miles from home and live in a trailer during the week (the commute is terrible around here, but I can't afford another or even a different house). My propane Stove went out a couples years ago now and I started using my BBQ, A toaster over and/or an electric skillet instead. My first skillet was "Silver stone" coated. First time I burnt something in it was the last. I then bought a Stainless Steel pan but didn't like the temperature control and it can be hard to clean. This Zojirushi pan not only can be used to higher temperatures (460F instead of the usual 400F), it's a dream to clean and the temperature control is great. I've already burnt something (on Purpose) Blackened peppercorn Rib Eye. Great!!! (anyone got a good air purifier, next time I'll do it on the porch, another advantage, its portable) But nothing sticks to it, don't even need oil or butter. I like it so much I've ordered the larger Sizzler and started using it too. It's got a larger surface and the sides aren't as deep so it's easier to get a spatula into. Also it goes to 480F (call the Fire Department, yee hah). The design is different, but it's a great pan too.

A pot that can be used on top of the range, as well as in the heating base of the appliance offers plenty of options. The cover allows you to cook with moist heat, and to cook things like burgers, fried dumplings, and eggs more quickly. Whether you like to cook for an audience at the table, or feel burner-challenged when it comes to cooking meals for company, you'll find this an easy to use, handy appliance.

Simmer Mat Diffuser Review

Simmer Mat Diffuser
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's quite by accident I found this product - on another website to boot. I had been looking for what I called a "burner grid" for about 2 years for our motorhome. The gas burners do not go low enough to simmer. I had checked all kinds of websites and stores over the past couple of years to no avail. Then I came across a mention of a "cooking mat" somewhere & had to check it on Amazon, which, of course, had the best price. I was ecstatic to find it. I really thought I was looking for a product that no one made & I would never find. It works just like it's supposed to: it sets over the burner (in my case, gas) and diffuses the heat enough to enable you to maintain a low simmer. No more burned sauces or soups! Thank you, thank you.

I received this cooker as a gift and was extremely pleased with it. I made a variety of different dishes. Uses include making delicate as well as hearty sauces, steaming, boiling water for noodles, an even deep frying. It has a greater capacity and greater ease of use than a Fry Daddy. The non-stick interior and exterior makes for quick clean up and the fact that it is fully submerssible (sp?) is a nice convenience.

Tayama Slow Cookers Review

Tayama Slow Cookers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
While reading a recently-recommended cookbook for smaller slow cookers, I shopped offline for what the book recommended -- an oval slow cooker around the 1.5 to 2.0 quart range. Oval (instead of round) because the shape fits more typical ingredients such as chicken breasts.
The picture attached to the 1.5qt product looked pretty oval to me, with a wide front face unlike other small slow-cooker product pictures. The title and description also lacked an indication that it is "round" like all the other small slow-cookers.
Well, the picture is just a camera angle, and this product very, very round.
Since it's here, now, I'm using it and it indeed works, so at least 3 stars for that!

I've had this slow cooker for 2 years, and it's burned nearly everything for this time. You can't set this while you're at work, which is the reason to buy a slow cooker. This item loses moisture and runs far too hot for what it's designed for. Buy something better.

I have tried to make 2 cheese dishes in the last few days (broccoli cheese soup and scalloped potatoes and chicken) and the directions instruct you to put the food on low for a certain amount of time. The Rival 3 temp crockpot (low, high and warm) has boiled both cheese dishes to make the cheese curdle). Upon further investigation, my husband discovered that many owners of the Rival crockpot experience the same thing. We are trashing this one and getting a slow cooker with temperature settings.

6qt Round Slow Cooker Review

6qt Round Slow Cooker
Average Reviews:

My Rival 6 quart slow cooker is falling apart after only six months. First the High/Low/Off switch broke off in my hand (and no, I did not manhandle it.) Then a carrying handle broke off, spilled hot stew everywhere and scalded my hands. Then the handle for the glass lid broke off under the weight of the glass lid alone, and the other carrying handle also broke off under the weight of the EMPTY crock pot (and I mean empty -- the metal shell only without the ceramic inner bowl.) The plastic of all the handles literally disintegrated.
There's really no excuse for this, My parents bought a Hamilton crock pot in the mid 1970s that still works today (after many moves.) My first experience with a Rival Product was their 4070 Hot Pot Express (which was excellent and has served me well for 12 years, though the RIVAL 4071 replaced -- and probably improved -- the 4070.) The 6 qt. round slow cooker cannot make the same claim.

Kalorik SC-11047 3-1/2-Quart Stainless-Steel Slow Cooker Review

Kalorik SC-11047 3-1/2-Quart Stainless-Steel Slow Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've just used my Kalorik slow cooker for the first time and it did a good job. I started it out on high for the first hour and then turned it down to low, so it took 7-1/2 hours for the turkey thighs to come to 180ยบ which made me feel like they were safely cooked long enough. I believe they could have cooked longer if necessary (if I wasn't home). Using the auto setting probably would have done the same - it is suppose to cook high at first and then turn itself down to low.
Next time I'll know how much the crock can hold so will reduce the recipe to just 3 thighs or 2 breast-halves and only 3/4 pound of vegetables instead of the 4 thighs and 1-1/4 pounds of vegetables the recipe called for. That way the crock will not be filled too high. The USDA recommends only filling a crock between 1/2 to 2/3 full. Even so, this slow cooker did not boil over despite broth being just 1/2" below the top edge.
The plastic handles never were too hot to use and the crock cooled down pretty quickly after the unit was unplugged. One thing you might want to know is that although the outside container appears to be thick stainless steel, it is actually somewhat thin - can be pushed in easily. That does not bother me, but I will be careful not to dent it. For the low cost, I would not have expected it to be more heavy duty. It does polish quite easily with a swipe by a dishcloth and looks nice. It does not slide around - stays firmly in place on its rubber feet and its glass lid did not rattle as it cooked.
Inside the box was a note warning that the dial was marked wrong - so the setting that is marked with one dot is not the low setting as the manual says - instead one dot stands for high while two dots stands for low. Also, just so you know, the manual explains that both the high and low settings allow the temperature of what is cooking to eventually come to the very same temperature - the difference is in how long it takes to reach that temperature. The manual also points out that it is the sides of the cooker that turn hot - not the bottom at all - this is so that whatever is on the bottom will not burn and stick.
The slow cooker puts off an odor and possibly smoke when first used, so it is recommended that you run it for 10 minutes in a ventilated room - this I did and found it to be true, so I am glad I opened a window nearby.
The reason I only give it 4 stars is because the manual says none of the parts can be washed in the dishwasher. This was a surprise - I would have thought the crock and the lid could have been.

Crock-Pot SCV702 7-Quart Oval Manual Slow Cooker, Red Review

Crock-Pot SCV702 7-Quart Oval Manual Slow Cooker, Red
Average Reviews:

I just felt compelled to share what I've found out about slow cookers.
We purchased this model slow cooker a few months back to use about 1x per week.
After using it several times, I discovered to my horror that the ceramic inserts - the darker color glazes all contain lead to some degree. Despite the manufacturers claim that their slow cookers abide by the FDA standards set in place, I did not feel safe using this product. Although the amount of lead in the slow cooker may abide by FDA standards, this is not zero, I believe that the FDA allows 7ppm to leach into the food over a 24 hour period to be considered "safe". There is currently no known safe level for lead exposure. Since I am cooking for my family, including a 2 year old, I decided to stop using this appliance. Lead doesn't leave your system, and accumulates over time, this is not exactly what I want swimming around my homemade chicken soup! After contacting the company, and asking if their slow cooker had any amounts of lead, and if so how much, I was told that information was proprietary! So, in other words, yes, our product contains lead, but we won't tell you how much it contains. Ridiculous!
After doing a bit more research online, I have come to find out that the white slow cookers are the way to go. Hamilton Beach was tested and found to have zero levels of lead leaching into the food after heating it for 2 days.
Bottom line is do your research before buying these appliances. Stay away from the dark color inserts, stick to white, and hamilton beach appears to be the safest from the research I've done.

I have used this several times now, and it is a great crockpot. It seems to have good temperature control, things are cooked perfectly, and the post cooking keep-warm feature is worth its weight in gold to me. I can start it in the morning before I leave for work, and set it to cook per the instructions, and it will finish and switch to warm. I used to have to just use recipes that could tolerate the 10 hours of cooking that they would have to endure. This is also a nice shape, for cooking a variety of items.
Update Dec 2010 - I feel like I should add an update to this review, given the quality problems some people have experienced - I have used this regularly for almost a year now, and it is holding up spectacularly. I store it in the back of a kitchen cabinet, so I have to drag it out to use it, so it is not being coddled. Most Sundays I roast a chicken in the oven, and then as I pull the meat off, I throw everything else in this crockpot (including pan drippings), cover it in water, add 1 TBSP of apple cider vinegar (for extracting minerals from the bones), and set it to cook on low for 10 hours, then switch to warm. Then I forget it until morning, when I wake up and unplug it, and let it cool a little. Then I strain it, and have 2 quarts of nice stock to use through the week. I love this thing, but it does sound like you either get a good one or a bad one, I would hope the company would send a replacement if it falls apart as quickly as some are experiencing.

Rival BB100 Crock Pot Barbeque Pit Review

Rival BB100 Crock Pot Barbeque Pit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got the Rival CrockPot BBQ Pit for my birthday in mid-December and I've used it several times since then, for chicken, ribs, and a decent-sized brisket.
First things first - read the instructions, which are brief and easy to understand, before using the BBQ Pit. One drawback to the instructions is that they just say the stoneware insert's easy to clean. Baked-on meat drippings, however, require significant effort to remove, and I advise you to spray the insert with a Pam-like product before each time you cook.
The BBQ Pit comes with a convenient reversable rack that can accomodate either ribs or a roast or chicken. I had a large brisket that I sort of had to shoehorn in, but after a few hours it had shrunk so that I could move it around easily. It's important to avoid letting the meat come in contact with the inside of the stoneware insert, because it might burn.
The BBQ Pit cooks meat at a low temperature, perfect for ribs or brisket which tend to be tough if cooked over 250 degrees. There's no substitute for time when slow-cooking, though - if you haven't got the time - several hours at least - this isn't the product for you. I was very pleased with everything I cooked in it over the past two weeks, but there are some drawbacks:
The electric cord, like that on most appliances, is pretty short - I measured mine at 32". If you can't locate the BBQ Pit near a wall outlet, you'll have to use an extension cord, which is someting I like to avoid in a kitchen.
The BBQ Pit has no external handles, so you need to place it carefully before cooking, because it gets too hot to move easily. In addition, the handles of the stoneware insert extend beyond the rim of the crockpot itself, making it easy to mistake them for handles with which you can lift the BBQ Pit - potentially a dangerous assumption.
You have to be extremely careful opening the lid when cooking is underway - along with a wonderful aroma comes a cloud of steam potentially hot enough to burn your hand.
Finally, because the meat drippings have a tendency to stick, I put a small amount of water in the bottom of the stoneware insert after the first time I used it, resulting in a moister cut of meat than intended - essentially I'd steamed the ribs and the brisket, although not to ill effect.
Overall, I'm tremendously pleased with the CrockPot BBQ Pit. I barbecue or smoke meat most weekends during the good weather (about 8-9 months here in Atlanta), and the addition of this appliance to our kitchen extends the BBQ season through the cold weather as well!
