It feels like a very safe pressure cooker. We have not always been there to take it off and it just releases steam like the old jiggle ones. Highly recommend this. It is very large which is what we wanted but may be too big for some.

I owned a six quart Kuhn Rikon Duromatic for about a decade. It worked great the entire time. But I recently destroyed it by leaving it on the high setting on a electric stove top with no liquid in it. The heat was so intense it delaminated the aluminum wafer on the base. So I just bought the 8.5 quart model. I love being able to cook lots of veggies all at once, so the increased size over my previous one is much appreciated.
The model I had for ten years worked flawlessly. It did require occasional maintenance about every five years when the spring pressure mechanism on the top gets a little sticky. I disassembled the spring mechanism and cleaned the shaft with 4/0 steel wool. A mild kitchen cleanser would have accomplished the same task. It was not difficult to do.
I have no hesitation rating this current model right at the top of the pack. They have made improvements over the one I bought 10 years ago. The industrial design is prettier to look at and the lid can be put on more easily. But the mechanism for controlling pressure appears to be the same, and it is a tried and proved design.

Kuhn Rikon 3342 5-1/4-Quart Stainless-Steel Pressure Cooker Review

Kuhn Rikon 3342 5-1/4-Quart Stainless-Steel Pressure Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've gone through 4 or 5 pressure cookers in the last 10 years, and I think I've finally found one I like. I work full time (40-60 hours a week), and I like to cook, so the time saved by pressure cooking is important to me. I use the pressure cooker mostly for meat, potatoes, beans and lentils. Typically, meat cooks in about 1/3 the time it would take in a regular pot. Pressure cooked meat is very tender and flavorful, but you need some experience in matching the cooking time to the type of meat. You have to be careful not to overcook.
The construction and finish of this cooker are excellent. It is made of stainless steel, with a thick aluminum plate at the bottom to spread the heat. This is a useful feature. Typically, pressure cooking requires high heat initially to quickly build up steam pressure before you turn the heat down. That is when food can burn and stick to the bottom of the cooker. This cooker spreads heat very well. So long as you use the prescribed amount of water or other cooking liquid, this cooker will not burn food at the bottom.
There is a two-level steam pressure indicator on the lid. The cooker comes with two booklets containing recipes, and a very comprehensive list of recommended cooking times for all sorts of meats, poultry, vegetables, beans, etc. If you follow directions, the cooker does not whistle or otherwise make any objectionable sounds. I can barely hear it from 10 feet away. Of course, if you forget to turn down the heat after the cooker is up to full cooking pressure, it will release a loud burst of steam. This is a safety feature.
The cooker has a shield on top of the lid to direct any escaping steam downwards, so there is no danger of burning your hands.
Kuhn-Rikon recommends using nylon spatulas to maintain the mirror-like finish, but you'll find them sadly inadequate when, for example, browning meat. I use a heavy gauge steel Calphalon spatula and steel tongs. After several months, I can see minor scratch marks inside the cooker, but the outside is still bright and shiny! Anyway, cookware should be designed to take this kind of handling -- it is meant to be useful rather than decorative. Stainless steel is the best material to withstand normal levels of use and abuse, and this cooker handles it well.
Keep in mind that a pressure cooker can't be filled to the top when cooking. It should never be more than half or two-thirds full, so the 5 liter capacity translates to about 2.5-3.0 liters of usable capacity. If you cook large quantities, you might want to get a bigger model.
This is a relatively expensive cooker, but it is well worth the money.

Beginning in the 1930s, two successive generations of busy cooks employed pressure cookers to prepare family meals. The next generation, freighted with memories of valves dancing and hissing on stovetops, then snubbed pressure cookers. Now pressure cookers have come back, those old valves replaced by modern versions that ensure safety while delivering the speed, ease, and nutritional benefits of pressure cooking. This heavyweight, stainless-steel beauty is a fine example of contemporary engineering and style. Its mirror finish gleams, and its black handles, including a loop handle for two-handed lifting, stay cool. Pressure cooking traps steam to heat foods at temperatures higher than boiling. An aluminum disk in the base, sandwiched by stainless steel, speeds the process even more through fast heat conductivity. It's safe on electric, gas, ceramic, and induction stovetops. Little water is required, so nutrients, flavor, and color are not boiled away. Vegetables emerge vibrantly colored from the steamer insert. Stews, soups, beans--even meat loaf, pork chops, and desserts such as bread pudding--come out tasty and nutritious. (A booklet containing dozens of recipes is included.) You can brown meats in the pot before the lid is locked on, or use the pot without the lid. The stem of the operating valve shows high and low pressure so you can adjust heat for different foods. After cooking, pressure can be reduced slowly (just let the cooker sit for a while), normally (press the pressure indicator), or quickly (run tepid water on the lid's rim).Safety measures abound. The lid twists onto the pot; a rubber gasket ensures a tight seal. A vent releases steam if pressure builds too high, as does a valve that also locks the lid when any pressure whatsoever is inside the cooker. - Fred Brack

Just got this about 3 days ago, and I love it! It was the cheapest Kuhn Rikon, and I was a little nervous about it, but I love it. So easy to use. It is my first pressure cooker. I don't know how I lived without it. I have made rice pilaf, rice pudding, black bean soup, and cheesecake in it so far. It is made in India. The size is just right in my opinion. I was thrilled to get a Kuhn Rikon in this size for less than $100.

while this kuhn rikon is certainly pricey compared to other cookers, the quality and elegance is unsurpassed by anything out on the market. i really like the shape of this particular model because it allows me to easily braise and cook whole pork loins or roasts since the opening is flatter and shallower then KR's other models. Kuhn also sells a pyrex glass lid that fits on this cooker so it can be pressed into service as a giant saucepan or skillet, or for bringing food directly to the table in the pot. this cooker is almost always used in our kitchen for meal preparation - can't imagine life without it!

Kuhn Rikon 12-Quart Duromatic Stockpot Pressure Cooker Review

Kuhn Rikon 12-Quart Duromatic Stockpot Pressure Cooker

(More customer reviews)
I just received my 12 quart Kuhn Rikon pressure cooker a week ago and I've used it three times already. I was replacing my 30 year old 6 quart Presto cooker mainly because I wanted a larger utensil. I wasn't dissatisfied with my Presto, but until I tried this Kuhn Rikon, I didn't realize that such a gap existed in terms of quality.
I am so glad I chose this Kuhn Rikon 12 quart model. It is a very well built, heavy gauge stainless steel cooker with a nice heavy bottom to help heat it evenly. The handles are sturdy don't get hot while cooking on my gas range. The lid attaches and twists into place very easily with no awkwardness or sticking. The lid gasket is thick and heavy duty. There is no jiggler weight to get lost.
The unit is very quiet. It is so quiet that I almost didn't notice when it had come up to pressure the first time I used it. You have to visually monitor it until you reach your cooking pressure and adjust your heat source to maintain it. There is no escaping rush of steam or hissing jiggler to alert you. But this is in no way a drawback. The cooker comes up to pressure quickly, and thanks to the red lines on the pop up pressure indicator, it is easy to adjust your heat to maintain the desired pressure. The faintest wisp of steam escapes from under the top steam deflector during cooking.
If you want to release pressure quickly, you can push down on the central pressure valve with your bare finger without getting burned. It gets a little warm, but does not get hot. All of the steam is deflected by the round deflector on top. You can also push the pressure stem down with a spoon if you prefer.
There are no negatives with this cooker from a usability perspective. I believe it is the best pressure cooker on the market. The only thing stopping this cooker from completely cornering the market is the hefty price. If it were priced 50% lower, it would easily take over market share from other contenders.

I am extremely pleased with this item. I learned how to pressure cook with this pot, and now I can have osso buco ready in well under an hour; and I actually prefer it done in the pressure cooker!
Get a Lorna Sass cookbook and go to town with this baby. My only caveat: I usually cook for just two or three, and the size of this pot is fine for that. Most recipes are written for a six quart pressure cooker anyway. Still, there are a few times I wish the cooker was a little bigger so I could cook a larger volume--making stock, for instance, or making a big batch of chili.
If you're cooking for more than a few, you might consider the 8 qt model. That's not a criticism of this pot at all--I wouldn't part with it. It's a tool in my kitchen which I use often, sometimes several times a week. Highly recommended.

I don't know what I would do without my pressure cooker! and I know I would not buy any other kind but Kuhn Rikon. There is no way to be disappointed with this product unless you just don't know how to use it. We are vegetarian and live on a very healthy, grain, rich in legumes type of diet .. my kids love rice cereal, steal cut oats ..etc. and I just can't imagine making life easy without one of these .. instead of having to plan ahead or wait 45minutes to 2 hours for some dishes *(like barley and wild rice) it takes anywhere from 2 minutes to steam veggies and cook pasta, to 30 minutes max for the harder grains (without soaking!) I highly recommend this product ... it is an essential must have in every kitchen! just throw everything in (all those yummy grains, veggies, and even meat if you like, with a good broth) lock it and let it do its thing! :)

This 8-inch, 3-3/4-quart pressure cooker celebrates Kuhn Rikon's 50 years of making great pressure cookers. Like all Kuhn Rikon cookers, this anniversary edition quickly and healthfully cooks foods with trapped steam at temperatures higher than boiling. It's the ideal size for singles, small families, and vegetarians, and makes dishes for three to five people. Pressure cooking requires little water so nutrients, flavor, and color are not boiled away. Made of heavyweight, mirror-finish, 18/10 stainless steel that won't react with food, the cooker has a stay-cool handle and an aluminum disk sandwiched in stainless steel in its bottom to quickly and uniformly conduct heat. A bright blue steam diffuser on the lid displays cooking times of 20 popular dishes. The cooker comes with a stainless-steel steaming trivet and a Quick Cuisine cookbook containing 100 pages of recipes and tips.
Kuhn Rikon Duromatic pressure cookers are designed with safety in mind. The automatic lid-locking device insures that no pressure can build up until the lid is put on correctly. The lid cannot be removed or come off until all pressure has been released. The cookers also provide the ultimate protection against excess pressure. The first indication that too much pressure has built up inside the cooker is the audible hiss as excess pressure is released through the valve. (When the user hears this, the heat should be turned down.) The valve will take care of any over pressurization by allowing steam to escape through the holes located on the valve stem. Additionally, another spring-loaded safety valve in the lid is set to release steam in case of a clogged main valve. This valve is not a "blow plug" like some old American cookers had, but a highly accurate spring-loaded valve that will open at a preset internal pressure and release steam safely and effectively.
This Duromatic pressure cooker can be used on any cooktop. It can go into the oven only at settings below 300 degrees F because of the stay-cool handle and valves. The pot is dishwasher safe, although the gasket and lid should be washed by hand. This pressure cooker carries a 10-year warrantee on all non-replaceable parts, material, and workmanship.

Kuhn Rikon 6-Piece Duromatic Duo Pressure Cooker Set Review

Kuhn Rikon 6-Piece Duromatic Duo Pressure Cooker Set

We tried so many pressure cookers over the years as Indian Cooking demands heavy use of pressure cooking for making lentil soups and curries. We even tried few models from India but none could last more than a few years. Either they have problems with safety valves, handles, or they would become loose too often that requires tightenening of handles. If they last well, they were too bulky and takes almost forever to open and close the lid. Most annoying of all, they all make crazy sound that scares both my kids.
Kuhn Rikon pressure cookers sure have expensive prices but once you see them and feel them, you will find every reason to agree that they are well worth the price. This particular 2 set model is so lovely that my wife decided to get rid of most of her cookware as they both compliment each other so well. They can be used for almost everything we cook for our daily needs. The lids are interchangeable. This makes it so convenient to pressure cook veggies and lentils and then continue to use it with glass lid to make the final curry without having to transfer the cooked veggies and lentils to another cookware to make the curry. You can cook meat much faster and tastier without having to marinate for long.
The small one is so convenient if you have small babies and would like to feed them fresh boiled veggies, rice, or lentils. It saves lot of cooking time and the cook book that comes with it is wonderful. It gives you so many nice and simple receipes for everyone.
Couple of our guests got so impressed with this that they bought it right away from Amazon.com without waiting to get an incredible deal for it in their Amazon.com GoldBox like I did.

Kuhn Rikon 3344 7-3/8-Quart Stainless-Steel Pressure Cooker Review

Kuhn Rikon 3344 7-3/8-Quart Stainless-Steel Pressure Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My grandmother and my mother both used pressure cookers frequently. When I was younger, one of the first kitchen items I purchased was a pressure cooker of my very own (a Hawkins Futura jiggle-type, which still works perfectly).
Recently, I decided to purchase the 7 liter Kuhn Rikon, primarily because it is larger than my Futura. Some other reviewers have noted that the Kuhn Rikon requires more monitoring than jiggle-type pressure cookers. This is only somewhat true. Jiggle-type pressure cookers release steam throughout the cooking process. This provides confirmation that the cooker is operating through sound. It IS convenient if this is what you are used to. However, these cookers require more liquid to achieve pressure and as a result, certain items can come out more watery than I prefer. You can boil away the excess liquid after releasing pressure, but then you lose some of the time saved.
The Kuhn Rikon uses an advanced enclosed system. As a result, the "sound of pressure", or hiss is missing. A small valve with two red lines provides confirmation that half and full pressure have been achieved. At this point in the cooking process, you must turn down the heat to maintain pressure only; if you leave the heat on high, pressure will continue to rise. Without sound to guide you, one must rely on visual clues. The Kuhn Rikon makes it easy. But, it IS different than listening for the hiss.
The first few times you use the cooker, you will need to determine how far to lower your cooktop temperature to maintain the pressure in the cooker. This does require monitoring and a little guess work. However, once you determine how your cooktop and pressure cooker interact, it is the same every time. From that point on, you simply wait for the red line to appear and turn your cooktop down to your pre-determined setting. Set the timer and you're almost done. Easy. In addition:
1. The enclosed system is virtually silent;
2. The enclosed system allows fast, high temperature cooking without heating up your kitchen;
3. The benefits of a lower liquid requirement to achieve high pressure can not be overstated.
The Kuhn Rikon system is different but produces superior results. For those who possess even a modicum of patience, I highly recommend this pressure cooker.

This pressure cooker is probably the best on the market and a perfect size for a family. But, watch what you are purchasing, there are 2 separate types of lids on the Duromatic pressure cooker. This is the superior lid as it is easier to see the pressure, and turn it down to appropriate settings-fast release, slow release, with minimal effort. The other Kuhn Rikon's are awesome too. As far as I can tell, they are the same, with the exception of the lid/release. If you have the extra money, this is worth it--especially if you are a beginner. I regret that I bought the duromatic set without realizing the difference in the lids. I guess on the bright side, it means that I have pressure cookers in different sizes now.
If you are nervous about pressure cooking, there are awesome books out there to help lead the way-including pressuring cooking for dummies. My favorite is Miss Vickies Book of Pressure Cooker recipes, also found on amazon. She also has a website that offers a lot of free information as well as free recipes (although some have a small charge).
So, cook your food faster, save energy, retain more nutrients, and serve delicious homemade meals that seem like you have spent all day in the kitchen.
