The pan is as advertised - just like Grandma used to wield. Very solid, very attractive, and very good at helping to prepare the perfect bird or roast. Lightweight it isn't, but you never have to carry it far. Worth every penny.

Emeril Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron Vertical Poultry Roaster Review

Emeril Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron Vertical Poultry Roaster
Average Reviews:

This is a very well made pan. The surface is not as nicely finished as a Lodge product (number one in my book), it is manufactured in China. But the quality is decent and this pan will probably last forever. This in turn makes me wonder if I will regret this purchase. I've used it only once and to be truthful the "infusion" seemed to make no impact on the flavor of the chicken. Maybe I'm just at an age where most of my tastebuds are dead or perhaps I need to find some better recipes. For those who adore beer can chicken cooking this pan will probably be a big hit.
If you want to get a perfect finish on this pan rub it with a generous coat of shortening, warm it very slightly on the stovetop and then pop it into a 500 oven and turn the oven off. I always seal my cast iron just after baking homemade pizzas when the oven is super heated. Just don't put a cold pan into a hot oven. The surface will be glossy and perfect. You better have a good exhaust fan though, as the fumes are not too pleasant.

Great roaster but it is made in China. You think it is made in Wisconsin but when you get it. Stamped on the bottom made in China. Sad that we in the U.S. can not make are own roasters. Don't buy it.

This small roaster, perfect chicken size, is beautifully made, heavy weight and just a great bargain. the heavy weight means you can use it at highest heat on the stovetop to make graveis when the roasting is complete, without worries of buckling the pan, like my Calphalon recently did.

Magnalite Classic 15-Inch Oval Covered Roaster Review

Magnalite Classic 15-Inch Oval Covered Roaster
Average Reviews:

My mother always used Guardian Service cookware, bought back in the early 1950's, which was the ultimate in cookware then, also being cast aluminum. I inherited her cookware (which they no longer make) but not until I had already purchased a Magnalite set, which is the closest match to the Guardian Service. It is true waterless cooking. Easy clean up. I never had to "season" mine first (that's usually only done with cast iron cookware) and I've had most of my Magnalite pieces for 30 years. A 15 lb turkey fits in the 15" roaster and I get raves every Thanksgiving . . . the roaster practically makes it's own dark, rich gravy and the turkey meat is so moist! To me, as a devoted family "chef", nothing on the market can beat Magnalite.

So whether it's a turkey, casserole, vegetable soup, or dessert, this 15-inch oval roaster, constructed of professional grade, hand-cast aluminum, is appropriate for any family meal. The unit's phenolic handles are oven safe to 350 degrees F and ensure safe, secure transport to and from the oven. Washing the roaster by hand is recommended. With its sleek retro styling and durable cast construction, the covered roaster measures approximately 18 by 17 by 12 inches and carries a 50-year limited warranty.

Reco Romertopf 3-Quart Clay Baker Review

Reco Romertopf 3-Quart Clay Baker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A friend told me about clay pots, so I decided to try this one. I normally cook for 2 people. This is a medium sized pot and you could easily cook enough meat for 4+ adults, but if you want to cook the veggies at the same time (highly recommended!), you will need a bigger pot. Last night I roasted a game hen - my first attempt. I adapted a recipe from the Chicken Boulangere in Bridget Jones' "Complete Guide to Claypot Cooking". It was incredibly easy. I soaked the pot while I prepared the veggies. Just put some sliced potatoes, onion, lemon and herbs in the lower half of the pot and season with salt and pepper. Put the game hen in the middle, and then I put some baby carrots and another layer of potato slices around the bird and brushed everything with melted butter. I put the pot in a cold oven, and turned the heat to 450. It was done in less than an hour. As this was my first time, I checked the hen temperature with a meat thermometer - it was a perfect 180F.
One thing to realize is that the pot releases steam. This means that the veggies will not be crisp, unless you take the lid off for the last 10-15mins of cooking to crisp up the top layer. The result was truly delicious, by far the most moist poultry I have eaten for a long time. The potatoes were fabulous too, they absorbed the juice from the meat, giving them a wonderful flavor. Cooking everything in one pot tied all the tastes of the different components together very nicely. My husband loved it too. I will certainly use this pot on a regular basis, and can't wait to try it on chicken, duck, beef and lamb. It is a whole new adventure in the kitchen, which makes it fun! I may even buy the bigger 4 quart model, as it will make entertaining much easier - you can put the whole meal in one pot, put it in the oven and then forget about it until the timer buzzes! From my experience last night, I know I would be serving a tasty meal I could be happy to entertain with.

Perfect for quickly preparing healthy, high-quality meals for two to four people, this versatile 4- to 6-pound 3-quart-capacity clay pot may be used for a wide variety of foods, from soups and stews to desserts and breads. The baker is made of porous clay that is unglazed inside and out, which allows it to "breathe" during the cooking process. Soaking the baker in water before baking allows it to create and maintain moisture that cooks recipes to perfection, while preventing flavors and nutrients from escaping. The pot should be placed inside a cool oven and then the temperature should be set, allowing the oven and baker to heat up gradually. Sudden temperature changes should be avoided. The handsomely embossed terra-cotta baker easily moves from the oven or microwave to the table for use as an attractive serving piece. Made in Mexico, the dishwasher-safe clay baker measures 13-3/4 by 9-1/2 by 6-1/3 inches.

Norpro Stainless Steel Vertical Poultry Roaster Review

Norpro Stainless Steel Vertical Poultry Roaster
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I use two of these regularly and have given a number of them as gifts to people I really like.
Most whole chickens in the market are FAT, and this drains the fat off the vertical chicken very effectively. Also, all the juices are retained in the dripping pan. When the chicken is nice and crisp, we enjoy it but we put the dripping pan into the fridge. In the morning, we skim off and discard the hardened fat and freeze the nonfat drippings in a baggie to flavor future chicken dishes.
I've used the vertical roasters that are painted black, but the black paint eventually puffs and peels. This unit's stainless steel is durable, hygienic, and easy to wash.

This roasting rack works perfectly in the bottom of my crock pot - it makes meats much easier to cook and this way they don't lay in the grease in the bottom. It's also very easy to clean.

HIC's 10" X 6" roasting rack allows one to roast their poultry or meat without touching the bottom of the pan. This is critical to roasting as this type of cooking refers to dry heat.Without using a roast pan, the poultry or meat would boil in its own juices.Using a roasting rack is also a healthy way to prepare roasts as it allows the fat to drip off the poultry and meat and rest under the rack. Small size is perfect for use in smaller pans.Handwash with a non-abrasive cleaner.

Tumbleweed Pottery Original Chicken Cooker Review

Excellent cooker - wonderful chicken. Put a little cranberry juice in the well, rub the bird down with Konriko Greek seasoning and you're all set. In my oven, a 5# chicken needs about 2 hours at 375.
The only negative is that the bowl developed a hairline crack across the bottom after about 10 uses. To be fair, this was after cooking at a slighty higher temp than the instructions say (they recommend 350). So far, the crack has not seemed to affect performance.
UPDATE, Oct 2007: A year later, the bowl with the hairline crack is still working fine.
